Am after a replacement for my ageing, failing Renault Scenic, and have been seriously considering Mondeos :p Have had one before (1.8 LX TD), but was looking for something better and newer.

Seen a couple that I like the look of - what do you guys think a good price would be for a model of the following spec:

2.0 (any more gets expensive on tax)
The more trim/toys the better (like the look of the Ghia X)
Petrol (can't justify diesel)
Hatchback
Max price £7000
preferably 2004 or newer (post-facelift)

any other car suggestions considered with the same spec.

Thanks.

With 7k the worlds yer lobster mate.Loads available at that price and top spec models, the TDCI ones tend to command high prices, but the petrols are actually very good value for money.

I wouldn't say the TDCI's are 'that' unreliable, yes they have issues but it isn't like the turbos are consumable items or anything!

As for 7k max, that would get you whatever model you like, I got a 2004 TDCI Ghia X for just over £3k

I have the exact same budget (max 7k) and i'm also fairly decided on getting a mondeo. I'm trying to decide between the ST220 or the 2.2 TDCi ST. My head says the diesel but my heart says the petrol....

We had the 2.2 TDCi and it was always misfiring and the mpg slowly dropped over time. I hear the injector issue is common and expensive. Luckily ours was a company car and covered under Ford warrenty anyway.

Just make sure you test drive a few first to check out the notchy gearbox/clutch, which could prove annoying at the very least. I have a thread on issues on a just bought Mondeo mk3, which is quite common.

There's a local garage here with an 06 registered Titanium X 2.2 TDCI estate for £7495, so thats the sort of thing you could probably be looking at

That is the sort of thing I'm looking at, though I don't want an estate or diesel! I'm only just starting to look, so there should be a few coming on the market in the next couple of months - I'll wait and see!

Thanks.

My post facelift 53 Ghia X V6 with extras is worth around £3.5k (probably going to sell soon) with slightly below average mileage, so no need to spend anywhere near £7k.

And the V6 won't cost much more to tax, though more to fuel - worth it for the noise though.

"Sightly below average mileage" is a meaningless term for most people (as at least half of people have no idea what average mileage is)

What mileage is the car?

The point was, both estates and diesels can conduct quite a large premium. A 2.0 hatch version of that should be 6~6.5k I'd imagine
