Well think my trusty system is on its last legs. Started with random crash/reboot in windows even without load.

Still random restarts and crashes during POST and in bios menu. Running everything back on default speeds now and not getting as far as windows.

Tested with single stick (tried a few)and not made a difference so ram not the issue. Thing left is either mobo or psu?

My system pretty old 6 years now iirc. Have I missed anything to test? Was thinking to upgrade for a while so maybe a new cpu, mobo and memory first and then psu. I am using 850w so perhaps can't produce enough power?

If I am going for a new system not overclocking it as I just want a system fast enough to play my games/apps stabily this time round.

Any help would be appreciated?

It may be as simple as a failing CMOS battery or dried-out thermal compound. However, you have been overclocking your CPU, which does reduce its lifespan.

With regards to new equipment, I would replace the PSU at the same time. There's no point risking new equipment with a possibly dodgy PSU.

If you're sure you're not going to overclock then you can save money by going for a H170 / H110 / B150 motherboard instead of the Z170 and a non-K CPU. And check for motherboards that will take DDR3 memory to save even more.

Thanks for the reply guys. yeah think you are right going to upgrade the whole lot. Not going to do anything fancy so going to get a half decent cpu, board, memory and psu.

Have not kept up with the latest cpu's and mobos. That is quite a good suggestion Lemin, was thnking to go for Skylake as it runs 4Ghz on SPD? Is this a good idea?

My current mobo was Gigabyte but thinking on going for another make (Asus?? )perhaps to be more reliable or is Gigabyte still the one of the leading competitors? What is the better chipset?

Cheers

Hi

Just quickly knocked this together. is this mobo and ram ok for this setup?

Corsair AX1200 1200W ATX 80 Plus Gold Modular Power Supply - £168.95

Interl Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz (Skylake) Socket LGA1151 Processor - OEM -£319.99

Team Group Elite 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-19200C16 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black - £67.99

Corsair Hydro H60 V2 High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler - £71.99

Not sure what mobo to get as i have a nvidia gfx card? So any suggestions on the ram and mobo or just go with Lemin's suggestion?

That PSU is massive overkill unless you're running multiple graphics cards. If you're sticking with a single card, then a good 550W-650W PSU is all you need. Have a look at the EVGA G2 & GS PSUs and also the XFX XTR series if you want fully modular.

I had a Corsair 850W psu and that may be the issue with my current system where it was struggling and perhaps couldnt cope over time. The RV02-E case i have has 4 case fans so need quite a bit of power.

I have
3 x sata drives
1 x ssd
1 x GTX 780ti
3 x 180mm Case Fans
1 x 120 Case Fan
1 x internal Bridge Mount Fan
1 x Hydro H50 Heat Sink
2 x 120mm Heat Sink fans
1 x DVD Drive
2 x LED lights
1 x Gaming Mouse
1 X Gaming Keyboard

The 1000+W PSU is only £30 more than a new 850W psu. So was thinking it would give me more options and less concern about it coping?

and the answer is................PSU!!!!

Just spent last few hours replacing it with a spare one i had. It not even as powerful and so far no more crashes and first time boot ups each time. Oh well thankfully it still under warranty. No new PSU needed then but gives me a excuse to upgrade :)
