Time for a New PSU? PC Doesn't Start (Maybe a new case too)

Alllooo. Allo.

My PC is refusing to start up so I did the paperclip trick on the PSU. Switches on when I have nothing connected to it, i.e. fan spins up, but as soon as I add a case fan to one of the molex connectors, no action.

Guessing it means my PSU is officially dead? It's an OCZ 700W jobby 4 years old already.

What do you recommend?

System is:

AMD Phenom II 940 (Stock cooler)
Gigabyte Mobo
6GB DDR 2
Sapphire Vapor-X 5770
2 Hard-drives

I thought at the same time I may as well get a new case too (currently in an HP case carried over from the original machine, a bit cramped in there).

So - best Case and PSU combo? I really don't want to spend too much, but at the same time don't want my system to blow up :D

Ta!

yea the cm silent pro 700 is best for the price, and the z9 too, merc alpha/beta is cheaper than the z9, but when u factor in the extra fans + fan controller of the z9, the z9 works out cheaper

The shinobi is a good looking case. You caould also go with the same PSU, but 500w rather than 700w and save a bit of money. that system only likely uses around 300-350w so 700w is pretty overkill unless you want to add a new gpu and crossfire it.

I was just about to ask whether 700W would be overkill for what I have :D

I'm only a casual gamer, so crossfire is never on my mind - the wife is always shouting in my ear pulling the purse strings though ;)

the best efficiency of a PSU is around 50-75% load. if you only use 20% of the rated load, then a lot of the efficency is "wasted"
i used to have a rubbish 500w psu and that ran a 5770 and a phenom II X4 695BE so a good quaility, 450-500w psu should handle it perfectly. 500-550 may give some headroom for a gpu upgrade in the future - the 7000 series die shrink is basically 2x performance for the same power consumption of previous gen cards - the 7970 = 2x 6970's at 6970 power consumption so you could power a 7770 or probably even a 7870 with that same psu which is a great upgrade.

Ohhhhh yeah, love it when it's so straight forward.

BitFenix Merc Beta and Coolermaster 500W ordered :) Case not such a priority, so I went for the cheapest weeeeee.

Thanks all!
