Time for a new Winter coat...

I was going to go for the McMurdo or the Prism optimum until i went into a couple of stores and asked about coats in general. I was told that for english weather where it rains a fair bit, down filled coats arent the way to go because it will bunch up like a tennis ball when wet.

I was advised that the best way to go is layering as its the warmest too and can obviously remove some. I currently have a North Face fleece from a triclimate coat and a outset waterproof layer (resolve jacket)

Personally I think that with a skin base layer, fleece with windstopper and a fully waterproof outer layer, you will warmer dryer and have spent a lot less than a canada goose jacket.

£250 gets the following,

Skin £30
Fleece £70
Waterproof outer £150

You have a lot more choice and can obviously wear one without the other... - look at North Face, Mountain Hardwear and Lowe Alpine amongst others

i wouldnt dare wash the thing if it cost that much and i assume you'd want to if you intend to own it like 20 years to justify its price

Agreed, unless you're dealing with some seriously harsh weather, well well below zero or something - layering is the best option.

A good base and middle insulating layer can be had pretty cheaply. Then the outer layer is to deal with the weather (wind and rain) so spend a little more for something realiable made with a breathable material like Gore-Tex.

If its purely for the British winter, even a sub £100 jacket with thin lining would probably do. But again, layering is always more flexible and the best option unless you're going on some crazy expedition.

Atleast in Britian, you won't need Canada Goose.

The North Face jacket I posted is completely waterproof, so the filing won't get wet or bunch.

The traditional multi-layered approach is something I've tried in the past, but don't really like if I'm honest. Wearing a fleece under a Gore-Tex shell always makes me feel like the Stay-Puft Man from Ghostbusters :(

I did try a quilted Berghaus gillet today, so that might be another option in combination with a Mountain Equipment Gore-Tex shell I've seen. But if I do go this route, it's as well as rather than instead of the North Face Ice Jacket or similar. My current Gore-Tex shell is at least 5 years old now, it's time it was replaced.

£300+ though, it is fully waterproof as well, and being Rab its the top notch gear.

If it was mr though id go for this with a fleece.

I have to reiterate this, are you planning on an Antarctic expedition ? or just wearing it to the car for 30s every morning?

Well it's not really a technical item, so it's for casual Winter use. I'm just sick of being cold when walking about town during the Winter. Last year was just miserable with the kit I had. I do quite a bit of walking, but like to keep my kit task specific. I'll replace my Gore-Tex shell, and possibly by Gore Windstopper as well (that's 7 years old now) - but that's walking kit, not something I'd wear casually :(

But have you ever tried on the ice, gotham or mcmurdo coats? I tried on a mcmurdo and felt like mr soft(or as you say the marshmallow man) :)

Heh :)

I am going to Milton Keynes this afternoon, the Outdoor Shop has the Ice Jacket in stock, and the Buffalo Hooded Belay jacket, so hopefully I'll be getting them both as long as they look and feel OK.

A friend has the McMurdo, so yes, I know it's 'well proportioned' ;)
