Time for a new Winter coat...

I've looked at it, and discounted it on the basis of cost, and that it also doesn't appear to be waterproof which is a concern in our climate.

Lol which one isn't water proof? The one I linked is very water proof.

As for the "not the right climate" for a goose I wear mine normally down to -10/-15 (with wind chill) with only a t shirt underneath. I didnt want to have lots and lots of layers on.

But again the cost is a big issue.

I can't remember now, sorry :(

I had a look on their web site, at a model which was waist length, it may have been the Ontario, and I saw nothing in the description that stated it was waterproof, or that the material was of a waterproof type.

As for the "not the right climate" for a goose I wear mine normally down to -10/-15 (with wind chill) with only a t shirt underneath.

Again, this was from the perspective of our Winter typically being not only cold, but also wet - take this in conjunction with my misunderstanding explained above.

I didnt want to have lots and lots of layers on.

Me neither - the reason for trying to find a decent single layer jacket.

But again the cost is a big issue.

It's not so much that the cost is an issue, but it is about a sensible approach. I can spend £500 or so on a Canada Goose, or I can spend £250 on a North Face Ice Jacket, and the other £250 on a Buffalo Hooded Belay Jacket and a Pro quality Mountain Equipment Gore-Tex shell. It just seems to give me more options, especially as my current shell and mid-layer are ready for the bin :(

Lol, since when do you need an expedition jacket for uk weather?

Buying something that will last does not equal buying something completely inappropriate.

My canada goose is way too warm for the UK. Until it gets to about freezing you can just walk around with it open and just a t-shirt on, so it's a bit overkill for 11/12 months of the year. :o Careful of the fakes as well.

Just back from The Outdoor Shop at Milton Keynes. The North Face Ice Jacket is exactly what I wanted, so I bought one. Medium size in black. I also tried the Buffalo Hooded Belay jacket I mentioned earlier, and that is a superb Autumn layer, so I bought that as well. I got a £40 discount on the North Face and a £20 discount on the Buffalo.

The staff were very friendly and very helpful. They do have a web site as well, so you don't need to visit to order.

I just need a new Gore-Tex shell, a new mid-layer, a couple of new pairs of walking trousers, and some walking boots and I am sorted! :)

Just went and bought this bad boy today, which isn't too bad considering the price and budget I had-

I know its not going to be amazingly waterproof, but I didn't fancy paying an arm and a leg for a waterproof jacket and 70 quid wasn't to bad at all.

Also significant as it is the most I have ever spent on an item of clothing

My 2p worth.

I have a rab jacket at the minute and its a lightweight number. Amazing in any weather though the waterproofing neeeds to be reapplied to shoulders. Amazing quality and so many little things that make you go wow. With a wicking layer up on the beacons in a storm wasnt anything too much for the jacket.

Timberland jackets (the decent ones!) are amazing. Had one for 3 years and wore it everywhere and it survived. Was fun going out in storms just to watch the jacket keep me warm and dry. The waterproofing failed but for 3 years at Uni was amazing.
