Hey,

My current set up is roughly 5 years old and I feel like its time to upgrade it. My old spec is:
  • Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W)
  • Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard
  • Aerocool Xpredator X1 Midi Tower Case – BlackOrange
  • Akasa AK-CC4008HP01 Venom Voodoo CPU Cooler
  • XFX Pro 450W Core Edition '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply
  • Corsair XMS3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit
  • 2 x 120 SSD
  • 2 x 3TB HDD
  • 1 x 2 TB HDD

I do not game on my pc, I mainly use the pc for video editing and running VMs.

With Coffee lake being released last month would like to be running that. I was think I could reuse my old rigs PSU, HDDs and possibly the case. I also have OS keys.

With that in mind what would you recommend on a £700 budget?

Thanks in advanced :)

Hi,

Only an AMD build can give you what you need for the money you are prepared to give:

16-thread power house processor, 16 GB DDR4 3200 memory and higher-end X370 motherboard.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £695.06
(includes shipping: £11.10)

How much do you reckon it would cost to get an intel build?

An i7 8700k CPU alone is about £430 if you can find one so substantially more. Then add in a Z370 MB for another £125 - £160.

However, if you didn't need a very powerful GPU, the IGP on the 8700k should save you the £120 on the AMD GPU so £80 more. With a GPU, £200 more than the build above. However, you could get a different AMD motherboard and save another £30 So the Intel is approximately £230 more.

If you said gaming, it may be worth waiting for the 8400. But from my little research, Ryzen seems the way to go. But with recent price cut deals, I can see a big across the board price cut to ryzen chips especially when 8th gen becomes readily available.
