okay, so my athlon 3500+ system is about 3 years old now, and ive just had to replace my dvd burner, so i was thinking about making a few upgrades. not going the 'whole hog' this time, as i have numerous bits i will be able to re-use.

here is what i am looking at;
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6000+ 3.00GHz (Socket AM2)
MSI K9A Platinum Crossfire (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C5 TwinX (2x1GB)
Sapphire ATI Radeon X1950 Pro 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)
Zalman CNPS9500-AM2 Aero Flower (Socket AM2/939/754) CPU Cooler

priced up, including delivery all comes to just under £400.

will be using;
74gig raptor
120gig seagate barracuda
lg 18x dvd burner
corasir 520w psu
all going in a lovely lian li pcv1000+

how does that sound?

finally, i am quite impatient and would rather get this built asap. i currently have a nvidia gfx card. will that work in the new mobo? (just thinking i could run that for a couple of weeks until i can afford the sapphire card).

cheers.

my friends all have intel, i just like to be different, so have had amd in every computer i have built.

£400 isnt a budget, its just about what i would be able to afford to spend this month. i have only just had the thought and not looked into it too deeply, as i have done before. usually i figure out what i want, save up for a couple of months. due to my sheer impatience then i cant really afford much more (i will also be purchasing vista ultimate oem). unless you can make a suggestion, or there is the most amazing new product coming out next month, then i may be prepared to wait ;)

as mentioned are you willing to overclock and are you a gamer, if so what res do you normally game at.

main releases coming up are the new nvidia gfx cards and some dx10 based games (bioshock being the closest to release).

not really into overclocking. gave it a few goes but didnt seem to have any success, so rather than reading up i just gave up. i would be willing to give it another shot though, definately. i will probably start off with the 3500+ that i am replacing before i attempt an overclock on a brand new processor though!
starting to get into pc gaming with a couple of friends, but generally stick to the xbox.

mainly use the computer for making videos, listening to music and watching movies etc... i have seen these ati hd gfx cards, might it be a better option to get one of them instead of the x1950?

If you use an older system to overclock your more likely to damage something and be put off trying.

Newer chip's are harder to burn, but if you would overclock, id highly suggest getting a budget intel chip ( such as an E2140). Mines currently overclocked to 3ghz and is under stock max voltage, and all it envolved was changing the fsb to a higher number.
