Hi All,

Got that feeling again... Time for an upgrade. I'm ok for drives/ssd/case etc. Thinking of going for a new CPU/MEMORY/MOBO/COOLER and installing in my existing case.

Current spec.
  • 2 x Corsair XMS3 4Gb ( 2 x 2Gb ) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600Mhz Dual Channel Kit (CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 ) so 8Gb in total ( 4 x 2Gb )
  • Intel Core i3 530 @ 2.93Ghz Clarkdale ( socket LGA1156 ) - overclocked.
  • Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H intel H55 ( SOcket 1156 ) Motherboard v 1.3 - micro ATX
  • Arctic cooling freezer 7 pro.

PC is switched on 24x7 so needs to be quiet.

I'm not a gamer but use the PC mainly for photo/video work. Plex server. I want to go for a i7/16Gb level spec. Got around £600-700 to spend on this. Got a full size case so don't need micro ATX.

I hope to retain;
Case Antec
Corsair 520w power supply.
128Gb SSD and drive
1 x 2Tb WD black
1 x 3TB WD green.
Graphics is a GV-NX73G256D-RH ( told you I wasn't a gamer ! )
1 x burner (bluray)
Win 7 64.

I run 2 x 24 inch monitors (Dell ultrasharp ) so I could also add a reasonable graphics card ( quiet ) would be great but don't need anything amazing. This can be in addition to £600.00.

Thanks to all in advance.

Great - sounds ideal.

Do you reckon this would overclock by much ? May not bother but probably end up giving it a go.

also forgot to mention quiet wanted to give watercooling a go this time. Any ideas ?

It will not overclock too well with that cooler - you will want at least a Coolermaster Hyper 212 evo

If you want a solid overclock, you can try a Be Quiet Dark Rock 3, which is both capable and very quiet:

Also, if you do video work, I would suggest that you invest in a better video card than an Nvidia 730.

What exact case is this?

Hi - Case is really old. It was an Antec silent case and it's housed my last 2 builds so it's probably 6 years old. Black and plain. I'll try to dig out the details.

I'm thinking, as the upgrade is coming in for a reasonable price, I could push for a new case.... Ideas ?

Me again - reckon it's a Antec SLK3700 BQE

Here is a nice case - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-001-RT&groupid=2362&catid=2850

Good GFX card length support.

Good CPU height support.

Two fans and rubber cable management grommets.

What SSD is it that you have?

What model? if it uses an early Sandforce controller (SF 12**) then its not going to work on a Z97+97 board.
