Hi all.

I'm currently using an old PC which I built around 2011, I fancy an upgrade and would like some advice.
I'm looking to keep using the case which is a Silverstone aluminium tower, not sure of model, and also the PSU and GPU (for now).
Usage wise this PC will be a bit of an all rounder, basic office stuff and photo editing, but also games. I switch between using a 1080p monitor for most software, and 3840x1024 triple screens for racing sims.

My current PC has evolved over the years but right now comprises of the following;

  • i5 2500k
  • Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H
  • 16gb mix of Corsair and Hyper X DDR3
  • Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1060 6gb
  • Crucial 250gb SSD
  • 2tb HDD
  • Corsair TX650 PSU

I have a budget of around £400 to £500 and have been researching other threads in this section, so I've already got an idea of what I think I need/want.
I haven't built a PC for a long time now so could you point out to me any obvious mistakes or incompatibilities with these two systems. Also feel free to suggest alternatives.

The first one, I think I might fancy a bit of disco light action in there...

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £514.45 (includes shipping: £10.50)

And this one if I back off on the bling...

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £466.45 (includes shipping: £10.50)

Thanks.

The second spec is better, with a better motherboard (even though the Aorus costs more it's bested in the VRM department by the Tomahawk).

Wouldn't you rather have a 1TB NVME? £90 seems an awful waste on 500GB of storage when you can get a decent 1TB WD SN550 or similar for £110. £10 more will get you Patriot 3600 RAM. And then it's £500 better spent, imo.

Thanks.
I would prefer 1tb yes, I think I had picked the SN750 due to the faster speeds, but I guess when you're in the thousands of MB/s it doesn't matter so much.
As for the RAM, will I see the benefit of 3600 on on that motherboard? It says "3.466 MHz via OC" which means I have to overclock the get that speed?
I've been out of the game for too long

Yes, with a Ryzen 3600 the 3600 RAM will work on that board a lot more often than not. Just click XMP to set as usual. Anything over default speed is considered an OC.

If I were to up my budget to £600, would there be a much better system available? Or not enough to make it worth the extra £100?

You could get a 3700x instead of a 3600 or just save to cash to put towards the gpu.
That's really the only change worth making.

Not yet, maybe later today. I've been looking around for little extras before I order, like case fans and big ol mouse mats.

Finally pulled the trigger on this last night, looking forward to the build.
Thanks for the input guys.
