Time for me to upgrade my GPU and Ram.

Hi all.

I would like to upgrade my PC.

My current PC is at least 5 years old for all components.

This is for gaming.

I'm looking at the 4070 Super, I think £600 is more than enough for a graphics card, I can't believe some are over two grand! and I think I would like to increase the size of my ram to at least 64GB, possibly 128GB (I don't buy parts often so like to future proof for as long as possible)

I was wondering if anyone here, first thinks that the 4070 Super is a decent enough card to warrant upgrading, second, recommends one card over another as there appears to be 27 of them for sale here and third is 32GB enough still in this day and age or would upgrading to 64 or even 128 GB be worth it?

Thank you.

You definitely don't need 64GB, and 32 will be fine for a while yet.

If you're gaming at 1440p or above, I would get a 7900XT, or stretch to a 4070Ti Super if you have preference for Nvidia, as the 12GB on the 4070S can be a limiting factor.
Thank you.

I've just found this https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html - how accurate is this? The 7900XT you suggested ranks below the 4070 Super and the 4070 Ti Super ranks below the 4070 Ti.

As above, for gaming 32Gb is more than enough. GPU wise take a look at AMD's RX 7900 GRE. It's a cracking card, cheaper and mostly faster than the 4070S plus it has more memory at 16Gb. If you hunt around you can find one for £515. Mine was a upgrade from a Gigabyte 3070 Vision OC and I don't regret switching from Nvidia to AMD one bit. I have had zero problems with drivers or anything else.
Thank you.

Same reply as above, according to https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html that 7900 GRE ranks quite a few cards lower than the 4070 Super.

Am I reading the charts wrong?

Use TPU's GPU database, it does rely on raster (does not include ray tracing and upscaling), but you can check proper reviews for that information:

You need to check if they perform the same at the chosen resolution too, since there is some variability there depending on the architecture and the VRAM capacity.

There's no point upgrading your RAM from 32GB unless you do something other than gaming or play heavily modded games like Skylines.
Thank you.

That's rubbish, read a couple of proper reviews such as this or this. Ray tracing isn't as good as Nvidias offerings but things have improved with driver updates and overclocking is now fixed. If it was a bad card there is no way I would have switched. With you gaming at 4k though you should be looking at a better card than the 7900GRE/4070S.
Thank you.

I mainly play World of Warcraft at 4K but play others occasionally. I also have also just bought a Meta quest 3 and intend to PCVR with it.

Very few games benefit from 64 GB. Serious flight sims like DCS, for instance. I've heard that Cities: Skylines 2 is another.
Thank you.

I understand that but I was thinking about future proofing my PC for a few years.

I don't upgrade my PC that often, maybe once every 4 years and just thought while I'm doing it now grab some extra ram but if I don't need it I can add the cost of it to the GPU, I'm liking the sound of the 7900 XT that's been recommended.

Thank you, I hadn't really considered getting a new motherboard and CPU.

That CPU you linked doesn't come with a heatsink/cooler/fan so that's an extra wedge on top.

I'll look into it, I'm not planning to buy until early September, I'm just getting an idea of what to look for so maybe prices will drop further if new ones are coming in the next few weeks.
