Cheap 32gb phones are practically given away these days they are so cheap. Which means the storage used is even cheaper

It should be relatively simple to put 8 chips into a 3 1/2 " drive and market it for peanuts (even as a Chinese knockoff)

You do understand that eMMC packages aren't the same thing that's in an SSD, right?

Cheap, low quality non-ssd grade flash dies paired with ultra basic 1 channel controllers with the host being done on the SoC directly. It's not hard to see why the 'storage' costs are so cheap in those phones.
