I'm looking at various network storage devices (qnap, synology, whs etc) but have a question as to how these work with time machine.
Most devices list time machine compatibility. Does that mean that they're natively compatible or require an agent installed on the Mac clients.
Also how come one whs server (HP mediasmart) is fully compatible, but another (Acer H340) isn't? Do HP provide additional software and If so, could this be used with any whs server if you can obtain it ? (if it's available for download).

I still can't decide what to buy, currently stuck between the HP Mediasmart EX495/X510, the Acer H340 or the Synology DS410 or DS410J or QNAP TS-419P.
The Acer gives me WHS and a lower power consumption that the HP, but specifically lists that it's not Time Machine compatible. The Synologys seem ideal, small footprint, low power consumption, but I'm concerned about lack of performance (network and CPU). QNAP seems similar to Synology only with a larger pricetag.

What to buy?

Thanks for the response. Adding Time Machine support to WHS seems a bit hit and miss from reading the comments on the page linked. I also checked a few other forums and the outcome seems to be the same.

Because of this (and the fact I found the HP 50quid cheaper today), I've decided to go with the HP X510 Mediasmart server. Fully supports Apple Time Machine and can also do bare-metal restores if required. Data integrity and systems that work together correctly are more important that saving 50quid here or there and then messing around with it to make it work. Actually worked out cheaper than the DS410 and all the QNAPs I looked at, so I'm pretty happy. Especially considering it's performance against a dedicated NAS.
