Time Machine configuration..

Is it possible to set Time Machine up so it doesn't use your entire drive for backup? Right now I have a USB 2TB drive and its going to keep eating it up until its full at that point it will discard old backups. Can I not specify I only want say a months backup storing?

You could partition the drive (e.g. 500GB for Time Machine, 1.5TB for storage)?

Only option is to partition it. Having said that it works pretty well, make it a reasonable amount bigger than your machine's drive and you should in theory have at least a complete backup all the time.

You don't need to partition the drive, just do a bit of fiddling with the timemachine "sparsebundle" to configure a maximum size. Do a search for getting time machine to work on a NAS and you'll find what you need.
