I'll try and keep this as short as possible
Mac Mini with mojave installed.
Big Sur unable to be installed because it wants the drive formatted in APFS
Full time machine backup taken to an external drive
internal drive formatted and Big Sur installed
during setup, connected the external drive and selected the time machine backup to restore data.
left overnight, came this morning to a flashing folder icon,
holding option during boot shows no drives connected
booted into macos using a bootable USB the internal drive is there I have ran first aid but its still not showing as a boot option
but worse the external drive that had the time machine backup on it is now showing completely empty.
used space on the internal drive is around 16GB so I assume the restore failed overnight so I can reinstall the OS but where the hell has the time machine data gone
This is a fairly regular process for me and I have never had this happen before.
