Hi,

I take delivery of a macbook in a few days & have been reading up on the joys of Timemachine.

How is timemachine gonna backup to my usb hdd when it isnt connected all the time? Will it throw a fit? or wait paciently in the background until its connected again?

Will I currupt the backup data if I eject the external usb while timemachine is updating? I ask this as the way I have read it timemachine works automagically in the background.

I read a blog somewhere where the guy had enabled timemachine to work over a network. Im assuming this is a bad idea over wireless considering the size of data involved?

Hope people can help.

Time Machine can work over a network by executing a simple unix code through Terminal, but, Apple disabled network Time Machine backups for a reason. It's pretty buggy, so you are at risk of loosing data.

If you unplug during a backup it probably wont do it any favours.. You will probably get an error message.

If it tries to backup when no HDD is present you will also get an error message: "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume". It will just backup next time you plug it in.

Can I set time machine to manually update then? and stop it automagically doing it?

If I can, I assume some magic progress bar comes up? So I know not to switch off the external HDD.

Am I right in thinking that apart from going back in time to rescue a currupt/deleted file I could also use a snapshot of my HDD on say day 29 @ 9pm to restore my system to that state?
