Is it possible to format a 2 TB external HD that supports time machine such that say 1 TB or so is formatted for time machine, and the other 1TB can be used as external storage for stuff thats not backed up ?
Yes this is possible, use the disk utility to partition the hard drive and then both partitions will show up as removable hard drives. One of these can then be made into the Time Machine backup drive.
