Hello all,

Im looking for some new build recommendations as I only do my due research on a rebuild about every 3-4yrs when needed. I want to build a new PC and get a new monitor to step up to 1440p, or more (I would like the monitor to last me for multiple future builds). I have no real confirmed budget, as I much prefer bang for buck, at whatever level that may be. At the minute I am looking at the following, although I'm second guessing myself on whether to go Z370 or x299. Aiming for £1000-£1500 excluding monitor

CPU: i7- 8700k
Motherboard: ASrock Z370 Extreme4
RAM: 2x8Gb (3200MHz)
GPU: Minimum GTX1070ti
Storage: Samung 970 Evo NVMe 500Gb (plus other SATA SSD storage and a reused HDD)
Cooler: I hgave a Cosair H100 in old PC that could be reused, otherwise looking at the NZXT Kraken X52
Case: (needs to have white): eyeing up Fractal Meshify or Lian Li PC-011 Dynamic.
Monitor: Undecided but taking recommendations

Any comments/ recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Should I wait a couple of months to see if certain components drop substantially? For example, GPU and CPU

Current spec is...

CPU: AMD FX6100
Motherboard: 990FX Sabertooth
GPU: GTX560ti
RAM: 2x4Gb (1600Mhz)
Storage: 2x 500Gb HDD and a 1.5TB HDD

2560x1440 is very good resolution right now.
3840x2160 (4K) has pretty extreme requirements for GPU horse power to process all those pixels.

As for CPU choise Intel has some advantage in most games over Ryzen, but you'll also be stuck in Coffee Lake.
It's sure bet that when ever Intel actually manages to get out something else than another respin of 6th gen Skylake it will need new motherboard.
AMD again has confirmed use of current AM4 socket up to 2020, so could in couple years drop in CPU likely beating Coffee Lake with good margin and have good PC for couple more years.

@atomos

as esat has mentioned 1440p or 1440p ultra wide (3440x1440p) is great for gaming . both can run at 100hz with 1440p standard pushing 144hz +

gtx 1070ti/Vega 56 > 1440p

gtx 1080ti/Vega64 > 1440p Ultra wide

Vega had dropped price reently (finally) , still a tad high but can pick up a Vega 56 for £450 , BUT freesync screens are £200 cheaper then NVidia version which keeps costs down!

as mentioned above, AMD and intel will adopt DDR5 2020 , not sure how AMD will work out as Zen2+ wouldnt be able to accept ddr5, but roadmap might have changed by then can it could support it and be Zen3 , time will tell .
Next chipsets from both should also support PCIe 4.0 , so X570 boards/chipsets should gain some ground on Intel as well as be a good change in hardware. from X370 to X470, there wsn't much of a change to warranty people giving up their 1st gen boards.

ryzen to match your i7 8700k which to be honest looks solid! only change i would make, Eisbaer LT 360 AIO!!!!!!
and standard 2.5"/m2 SSD as unless your doing heavy data workloads, you wont see much difference

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,925.18 (includes shipping: £15.30)

Are you recommending the 2700x over the 8700k? I can pick up the 8700k for £303 and from what I've read it's better for gaming, which will be its primary use.

I'm sure if I buy either, by the time I'm ready to move on with them there will be some new tech in the works

Not a huge difference between them, especially at higher resolutions. Also a Ryzen system will work out cheaper due to not needing high end cooling. The stock or a £20 cooler will do fine even when overclocking. With the 8700K you want a good cooler to overclock with as they run a lot hotter.

True, either one is fine. AMD in theory will last you longer or the board will as you can slap in a forth gen Ryzen.
If your set on Intel, (although £303 is a good price ) , 8 core is coming out on newer boards Q3

To be fair I brought the FX6100 because it had 6 cores and its never been used in gaming, its still barely at 4 used at the minute. So if I get another 6 core i'm sure that will be fine for a long time, let alone dreaming of 8 cores being used right?

If I recall, the whole design of the FX chips is that they were actually half the core count - been a while since I looked into lawsuit filed against them .

Either way, new CPU should last a damn good while !
