Time off at Christmas

how do u get time together?

I work shifts, she works Mon-Fri with a day off in the week. Sometimes we're like ships that pass in the night, but other times, due to my shift pattern, we're together constantly, and everything in between. We make the most of the time we do have together.

I'm currently serving overseas on a 4 month detachment, I will be working christmas and new years and wont be back in the uk until Feb. Once im back I will be taking 4 weeks holiday to spend some much needed time with my family.

I did the same year before last, tbh not having kids I enjoyed it, you'll realise afterwards how much you've saved not having the time off to spend it on food and drink and stuff.

Most annoying part of it for me was people trying to focus on the fact that it was Christmas. When you're working 12 hour shifts for 4 months it's easier just to put it to the back of your mind, at least I thought so anyway.

I got 30 days holiday a year, plus 10 flexi days (if I build up the hours). I have to take New Years Day and Christmas Day out of that allowance as that's the only two days we actually fully shut.
Thankfully though I'm off Monday - Thursday next week but working Hogmany (should finish an hour early at 4 though). I've used all my holiday plus 7 days flexi days this year. A fair amount of time off! Managed to get to Istanbul for a week, Amsterdam for a long weekend, Canada for a week and Japan for a fortnight as well as a handful of long weekends to London. It's been a good year.

21-24th Off, Aldi shopping and Mountain biking
24-26 Working, finish 0730 boxing day, then head to Mums with partner for tea.
27th-28th do absolutely nothing, maybe get drunk and more Mountain biking as Missus is working.
29-31 Working till 0730 New year's eve. Then I'm off till the 4th January.

See, this kind of thing bugs me - why should you have to use up your holiday allowance if the company chooses to close for the day?

The same thing happened at my workplace. Every year, 3 of our holiday days had to be set aside for the Christmas break. However this year, they told us it had to be 4 days, as Christmas Eve is a Monday and management had chosen to close the site. This didn't please many people as it contradicted the inclement weather policy, which stated that if management chose to close the site because of bad weather, we would have a paid day off. We ended up settling on working a full day on Friday (we usually finish at 1pm), and having the Monday off as a paid day - as a compromise. It seems that some companies have us over a barrel when it comes to holiday pay.

Edit: This leave is not taken out of my annual entitlement except Jan 2nd which i took out of my own leave. I work for a university so the building is closed and we got this leave as a perk of the job.

I had that too when I worked at the uni still wish I was there in some ways two weeks off on full pay and didn't even come out of holiday entitlement which was pretty generous (21-27 days) plus up to 21 days sick leave - on full pay.

I see your point but I suppose you could say I have 28 days leave a year then.

Working 24th, 27th and 28th but off over the new years week. Couldn't tell you the last time I booked time off specifically for the Christmas week. A lot of the ladies I work with have kids and grandkids so never seems fair that I have it off with none of those things to look forward too.
