Hi everybody,

I have a question. Is there any place where I can have access to some information about time off work to take care of parent?

If your parent has fallen I'll and needs you to take care of him for 3 months for examples you could take unpaid leave? How does it work? Is this something that is dependent of the company policy or there is a general law in the UK that allows you to take unpaid leave for that amount of time?

I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

It's dependant on company policy I think, the law only covers taking time off to care for children as far as I'm aware

Company policy on your pay and conditions. Look up Carer's Allowance - you may be entitled to some support if your employer doesn't offer anything, and you may also be able to get credit for National Insurance contributions.

As an employee you’re allowed time off to deal with an emergency involving a dependant.

A dependant could be a spouse, partner, child, grandchild, parent, or someone who depends on you for care.

What's an emergency?
You could get time off when a dependant is involved in the following emergencies.

Illness, injury or assault
This includes mental or physical illnesses that don’t have to be life-threatening or need full-time care - it could be an existing condition that has worsened.

All comes down to your company's policy. Whilst you can take time off to care for a dependent in an emergency, what it doesn't cover is long term care arrangements.

Read up on these then it will be a case of approaching your employer. Good luck
