2180@3ghz with 4gb and 8800GT on abit ip35-e

whats the best bang for buck cpu at mo? is it worth changing now or wait until i7 is cheaper? or just change the Gphx ?

I like gamming by the way :D @1680x1060 until i get 24" screen :)

I am in the same position and I think I am just going to pick up a new graphics card and save for i7 unless I can find a cheap e8400/Q6600.

I'd leave the CPU. If you change anything, upgrade to a GTX260 or 4870. You'll see a decent improvement over your GT on a 24" monitor.

I'd be tempted to micro upgrade myself! :o

Buy an E5200 for as cheap as possible (they were £54 inc when I bought mine) and then sell the E2180 . . .

£30 for an extra 500MHz and an extra 1MB cache, 45nm For The Win :p

as above tbh.Just get a slightly better cpu, and spend the bulk of your cash on new graphics. That'd be the best bang-for-buck upgrade, when it comes to games performance :)

If you are going to get a 24", you might want to consider a 4870 or GTX260-216, might want to wait a couple of weeks as there are new Nvidia cards coming out, not sure if prices will drop on the current cards.

I upgraded from an e2180 @3.2ghz to an e8500 @ 4ghz (it will go further but need better cooling). It was also a question I asked on here a few times and never really got a staright answer as to whether it was worth doing.

Was it worth doing??? Well, on GTA4 (I know, I know) on the benchmark my score went from 31fps to 40fps which is a 30% increase. Not bad for using the same graphics card. On far-cry 2 I never ran the benchmark but it runs noticeably smoother. The difference seems to be more that it lifts minimum frame rates and gives a more constant rate. Games are all different in what they require to run smoothly. Crysis hardly benefits at all, all that game wants is raw graphics power.

I can't give you many other figures because I don't tend to run many benchmarks. I'm glad i upgraded but maybe £ for £ is wasn't a huge upgrade. The way i justified it was, I'll probably keep this motherboard and CPU for a while now and even if I didnt, the prices of these s775 CPUs doesn't seem to drop much so I could probably sell the e8500 for 75% ++ of the price it cost me.

I find threads like these interesting, it shows that certain forum members really need big gains to consider swapping out hardware, nothing wrong with that and I understand that point of view but it's not one I share personally.

I know some OcUK forum members get through maybe two processors a month pretty much testing for golden-sample chips . . . that may seem funny to some but again I don't think there is anything wrong that and I understand that point of view but it's not one I share personally as I need at least two months to test a single chip in my sloth like fashion! :D

I'm thinking that the forum members who wouldn't upgrade a pretty sound E2180 for an even better 45nm chip are maybe a bit perturbed by the removal of their heatsinks or maybe just have a ton of other hobbies and a life! :o

LabR@t, are you a really infrequent upgrader or does the task of cracking open your system and exchanging CPU's give you the fear?

You could probably sell ye old E2180 for reasonable cash and pick up a fresh piece of silicon for a few beers and a pizza, is it worth it?

Im in the same posistion. Got a 2180 Oc'ed and a 3870.

Not really sure where to go for my next upgrade.

Was thinking of going Q6600 before upgrading the GFX but its been awhile since i looked into things and im not up to date on next vid card releases and price drops!

As another 2xx0 owner at 3GHz (965P-DS3, GTS8800 512 etc etc) looking to the next move - as there seem to be a few perhaps there should be a thread on people's experiences/results in moving from the 2xx0 series. . . .

I've also read the threads on dual vs quad and Eco Warrior arguments aside, can only conclude if like me you don't regularly upgrade and can get a quad Q6600/Q8200 to 3GHz then it makes sense. Not in the short term, but for longer term gaming (my principle use - with Arma2 supposedly for Q1 release and making use of multicores). So I'll be waiting for the multicore feedback on this game, since I have one spare core which might be enough for now.

:

i use to be an avid upgrader but due to due family commitments i.e 1 son and another on the way I am looking for value for money I have had the 8800GT and 2180 for just over a year now and its probably the longest i have ever kept the same setup TBH and i am dying to upgrade but want to make sure i don't have to upgrade for another year. Also in the last year I have picked up a ps3 and wii and this eats into to my prime time PC gaming which is still my favorite pastime.

feeling drawn towards 8400 and get it to 4/4.2ghz or something and maybe a 260 as I really got my eyes on a 23/24 screen 1980x1050

Tough call there LabR@t!

I doubt your current machine is holding you back much and in some respects your money could be better spent elsewhere. The E2180 is a decent LGA775 chip as is the classic 8800GT GPU. The real bottom line of upgrading is to spend cash when your set-up is holding you back i.e some games are laggy/almost unplayable at standard settings or some other non gaming tasks seem to take forever!

It may be a case of running your present set-up into the ground and then making a big upgrade in 6-12 months when Core i7 has settled and matured.

Dunno what else to say really, both the E5200 and E8400 are better processors than the E2180, the E5200 should hit 3.5GHz without much effort and the E8400 should hit 4GHz without much effort, just a pity that the prices have flown up on both these newer parts recently . . .

it can still cut it with most stuff just I feel the urge to splurge on some new HW and wouldn't mind upping the AA as I have had to start running 2aa or even off !

think i see what happens in jan

Yup, the upgrade itch is a beachhh! Looking at it from further away it sounds like you need some simple retail therapy, my girlfriend is lusting after a new handbag costing £150 despite owning several really nice ones already lol! :D

That's tomorrow! ;)

lol , oh yer ;)
