Time to change?

Features wise, I still don't think there's much point in upgrding from an X-Fi. I'd consider it for the headphone amp and convenience but that's quite a bit of money. IF you can compare THX TruStudio with CMSS and prefer the former then it might be worth it.

Really, soundcard capabilities have been pretty static for 10 years (thanks Microsoft...). A Soundblaster Z isn't really any better than an X-Fi - it's just different. You can get Windows 10 drivers for an X-Fi.

The sound blaster z/zx can change to speakers/headphones from the SB control panel as they have separate inputs on the card. I got the Zx as i like having the volume control on my desk.

The volume controller does degrade the sound quality. Can confirm first hand but there's loads about on head-fi as well. Obviously if you don't mind then go ahead but just a heads up :)
