I love my car, though in hindsight I don't think it was my wisest purchase at age 24. The car is a Clio 182 (55 plate 100k), and until now, I've not really had the disposable income to do much with it (other than servicing and the odd repair). This, and the age/mileage of the car means it has a handful of issues that I either need to address or avoid by selling.

Car is currently SORN'd. Here's the breakdown of costs to get it going again;

Priority list:
MOT & 12k service due in 3 months. (£165+£45)
Sump gasket needs replacing (£300+)
Front Calipers need refurbishing (Bigg Red £50?)
New discs and pads on the front (£75)
New front shocks (£90)
New springs (£160-170)

Total: ~£900

Non-priority:
New set of tyres (got tread, just mixed): £400
Alloy respray: £200-250
Detailed: £100

Total: ~£750

So that's £~1650

I'm about to start a new job where I will be commuting by train, so the car isn't an essential thing right now. I will however have a lot more disposable income in my new job, so I'm now thinking of getting it into the condition I've always wanted it in.

I'm just trying to make my mind up whether its worth keeping, and potentially requiring more money come MOT time, or see how much I can get for it. I could then spend the £900 listed above plus the price I get for the car, + a little extra for something with less miles and in a good condition.

Seems to me that those are just your run of the mill expenses you get with owning a car.
If you sell it and then plough a couple of grand into another car in a few months you're still running the risk of similar costs.
I'd keep it sorn and then get it fixed when you get the £££ with the new job.

Yeah they're just wear and tear, it's at the age and mileage where these costs come up. I guess it's the irrational feeling that you're putting £1500 into a car that I paid £2800 for.

Those are fairly typical expense and being a renault clio its actually quite a cheap car to maintain comparatively.

Buying another car wont really save you anything as you already have a car that you are familiar with and is reasonable to run and maintain. Unless you want to go down the banger route but unless you are confident in fixing bits yourself i wouldn't advise that.

They are just normal wear and tear and once sorted won't need doing for another few years. Better to fix up a car that you know than to sell it and take a chance on another car that you know nothing of the history. £300 seems steep for a sump gasket change though.

As its SORN and laid up at home why not do the work yourself and save yourself the labour costs.

All of that work is pretty simple DIY that you can easily read up on online and I'd even hazard a guess that there are specific Clio sport guides on most of those issues so that removes almost all the guesswork you might get just having a working mechanical knowledge.

The sump gasket goes from a £300 (sounds steep to me) job to a £20 part and can be done whilst your doing the service.

MOT & 12k service due in 3 months. (£165+£45) £165 for a service? even I can service my car :p And Im about as mechanical as a sprout

Sump gasket needs replacing (£300+) Sounds VERY Steep

Front Calipers need refurbishing (Bigg Red £50?) - Wire brush and some VHT paint

New discs and pads on the front (£75)
New front shocks (£90) - breaker/ebay/owners club
New springs (£160-170) - breaker/ebay/owners club

Total: ~£900

Non-priority:
New set of tyres (got tread, just mixed): £400 - what size tyres?
Alloy respray: £200-250 - ebay/owners club for 2nd hand ones?
Detailed: £100 - WHAT?!?! 2 Buckets, some chemicals and some sponges you wally :p

Total: ~£750

So that's £~1650

You can get those costs down quite considerably I'd have thought mate, if you sell it what kinf od money are you looking at? What kind of car would you be able to replace it with, and remember some of your things, detail, new tyres will likely need done on a 2nd hand car anyway

i thought the sump gasket price must be wrong too. then was reminded how badly renaults are to work on. its an engine out or subframe off job. good one !

i changed my golf sump gasket in an hour for a tenner last week :o

Pardon me for being a n00b/retard/feel free to add insults...

But why would you need to change the sump gasket? Are you actually sure that it's leaking oil because of that gasket? Or did some garage just hope to relieve you of £300 of your hard-earned?
