Time to retire my I7 920 - Ryzen upgrade advice

Hey there,

Well, I've been hanging onto it for as long as I could but it's time to let go of my I7 920 - Asus P6Dt-Deluxe based rig. I'm looking at upgrading to a system that will last me at least as long as this one has lasted and have decided upon a Ryzen 2700X build. Budget is around £1800 - £1900.

I have a BenQ XL2730Z Freesync monitor and am perfectly happy with it and would like to stick with freesync, so that rules out Nvidia. I am not a hard core gamer but I do like to game from time to time with as high settings as I can get. Games I will be playing are Witcher 3, Far Cry 5, Skyrim (modded) and GTA 5, Arkham Knight etc. I will also be using it for app development (Xamarin, iOS and Android). I don't need any storage drives as I will be using the drives from my old rig.

So the basket I have put together is as follows

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,885.71 (includes shipping: £15.30)

Does this look ok? Thanks for any suggestions.

Looks good - might want to swap the 960 Evo for the new 970 Evo (same price) - at this budget a tiny bit extra gets you a 12c24t TR CPU, this might help you get the longevity your looking for on a build

The Vega 56/64 are both overpriced considering you can get a GTX 1070 (Vega 56) for £338 or a GTX 1080 (Vega 64) for £480.

What is your current gpu ?

Freesync monitor 144hz 1440p the OP has

Over priced yes, but factor in £500 for G-sync monitor and they work out the same ...

Was that sweet point for £450 Vega 56 and 75hz 1440p freesync 32" for £200... Damn.. was a good time

Yep but he can still use an Nvidia gpu. Obviously just won't get the variable refresh rate.

Also he mentions not being much of a gamer so maybe his current gpu will do fine until the next round of AMD gpu's or the price goes back to normal.

Slight tweak to the build I posted above thanks to orbitalwash pointing out the Vega64 pricing
(Changes: case on offer, changed PSU, swapped cooler, added Vega64)

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,953.43 (includes shipping: £12.60)

Edit: Personally I would go for a GTX 1070/80 as mentioned by Lee, then use the saved cash for 32gb of RAM....

True , would save cash which is only a good thing , as well as drop PSU power and price .

I slap the 64 in as build was still cheaper then what was posted :D

Would be worth an Intel list.. OP program might run faster on them ..

Nice, thanks, I didn't see the 970 Evo, will swap for that. Also I really like AIO coolers so I think I will stick with the Kraken.
@orbitalwalsh I considered the Gigabyte WindForce Vega 64 but I had a Gigabyte WindForce R9 290 which failed just outside the warranty period....I think I'd be satisfied with the Vega 56 (unless another 64 comes on sale in the near future)

No worries, just bare in mind 2 years warranty on a £560 product :(
Kraken is CLC :) closed loop circuit , AIO is like Eisbaer or EKWB which can be custom and based off their custom part brethren
Corsair I based on latest gen of Asetek CLC, believe nzxt was their previous . Though Corsair have slapped a lot of RGB on it
You'll also see no gains in NVMe unless your loading and writing a Lot of data ( think pulling 2k 32MP pictures to be processed ), would allow you to get a good larger sized Samsung SATA 3 SSD

Why retire the x58 system now? Also what graphics card are you currently using?

I'd be tempted to say update the i7 to one of the very capable and fast 6 core/12 thread Xeons, X5650 or above, they are unlocked and can overclock on your current platform, 4.1-4.5GHz depends on the chip, and cost from £22+

The reason I say this is due to the state the current PC market is in. Both DDR4 and graphics cards are significantly over priced, there is a new generation of GPUs due out soon (more performance for the same money) and what's acutelya causing you to want to change, necessity, or bordem? :)

@Journey current gpu is a very old Radeon 5800 reference card, noisy and slow. I know the state of the market is not ideal but who's to say when that will change, could be waiting for a long time. There are a few issues with my current pc most likely due to the fact i've been running it overclocked to the max for 9 years. Plus the fact i really fancy a new rig ;)

howdy, gonna be doing an upgrade to threadripper 1920x cpu, asus prime x399-a mobo, want to no whats the most compatible 32 gig ram or basically all, oh and will my gtx 1070 be fine

Like others the cpu etc fine but the vega cards are just not worth the cash and some warranties on em are poor.

I understand you have free sync I do on my monitor but I still opted for nvidia.

If you do wish to still go vega def get the 64 for the small difference there is

I'm using Corsair LPX as it was cheap and it seems to work fine - best RAM will probably be the 8Pack stuff on the OCUK site as its samsung b-die I think - make sure you get 4 x 8GB sticks to get to 32GB so you get the benifit of quad channel.
1070 will be fine.
