at the moment im rocking a barton 2500 that has run a nice overclock to 2.4ghz since about 2002. its a nice silent pc, runs games pretty well, but its mainly used for surfing now but i think its time to get more games and i just want to build a new one.

whats the current must haves for a decent stable overclock?

need to know which cpu, board, memory and quantity, and what gpu.

i dont want to aim for the pinacle, just something thats easy to get hold of (relatively) that will make good gains, last well and be quiet

what do you recommend?

whats your budget?
Id recomend going for a high end 775 set up
as a starting place these are a few ideas of general things but without a budget cant say more
MB get a P45 mobo asus P5Q series is quite good
CPU Id recomend a C2D like the E8400 it'll OC well, your other choice would be a quad but they dont clock so high so if its gaming machine the e8400 is prob best
RAM you can pick up high end (PC8500) DDR2 stuff dirt cheap at moment
gfx card - most important part for gaming go for as good as you can get, choose whether you want ATI or nvidia then Id say 4850/4870 or 260/280/ or even new 295 when it comes out shortly. This is why you really need to post your budget
Get a decent aftermarket cooler, then your HDD & optical drives are pretty standard choices
You want to invest in a good PSU too, do NOT scrimp on this, go for something at least 6-700Watts from a decent company like OCZ, Corsair, Enermax etc
And case, if youre looking to OC (which you should be on this forum) get a case with decent airflow
