Time for an upgrade.
I only need the motherboard , processor , cooler ,ram and a new graphics card.
Just for general use and gaming. Don't need a high end graphics card as i only have a 17" display. Would prefer an Intel based system but i am open to AMD suggestions.

You could have a 16000 inch display and it wouldn't make a difference. What matters is the resolution.

I suggest you upgrade your storage as well as your power supply, as your kit is circa 2007 (afaik) and I don't suggest re-using parts that old, especially power supply/HDD

The basic gaming system that I would suggest for people these days would be:

i5 6600K
ASRock Z170 Fatal1ty
2X8GB DDR4 3000 (16GB)
250GB Samsung 850 EVO (SSD)
1TB Western Digital Blue (HDD)
Seasonic SSR G-550 (power supply)
Cooler Master Hyper 212 (CPU cooler)
*GPU wise, it depends on what the actual resolution of your screen is. If it is 1680X1050 or lower, go with an AMD RX470. If it is 1080P, go with an RX480 or a GTX 1060. VRAM wise there is little point in going past 4GB at 1080P or lower as few games use more than that right now. Having said that, there are games which want more (The recent DOOM won't let you enable nightmare graphics mode on a 4GB or < card for example) also it is likely that in a couple of years, a great many games may want more than 4GB of VRAM for ultra textures and full "goodies" enabled at 1080P so caveat emptor there.

What case are you running your machine in? Back in 2007, besides the Antec 900, there weren't that many high airflow cases. Modern parts (CPU/GPU) are higher TDP than what you have now and a greater level of cooling is required. Also it's nice to have some decent intake fans to keep your hard drives and SSDs running nice and cool and happy. There are a lot of great gaming cases out there that have 2 fans in 1 fan out by default with 2 more fans (not included) in the roof for well under 50 pound.

I would also pick up a tube of Noctua NTH1 or Arctic Cooling MX-4 as the Cooler Master plaste is quite meh. Should cost you well under 5 pound.

That res on a 17" display must be absolutely horrendous. I would seriously consider budgeting for a 1080p display.

Youll appreciate the PC a lot more if ya upgrade to 1080p.

For a grand you could probably get a decent 1080p pc with screen. Stulid will probably spec you one if he sees the thread. I would try but none of it would fit together if i did :)

I think your idea of a 'basic' gaming system is a bit off, a 6600K + 480 alone are £430. That's more 'high mid-range'.

An APU system like LewisRaz suggested is £130 less and comes with the motherboard and cooler!
