Hey guys, I’m currently looking at my system and it needs upgrading badly. So i have decided to upgrade the following:

CPU
Motherboard
RAM
HDD
GPU

I already have a case and a PSU that will do the job and no need for an OS. I will be using the pc for gaming mainly and i have a budget of around £400 – 450. Any suggestions?

With your budget I suggest something along lines of
Phenom X4 955 - 110
Simple 800 series AMD board - 60
4 gig of PC12800 RAM, eg Geil or Corsair XMS3 - 35
1Tb Seagate 7200.12 or Samsung F3 - 40
NV 480 (Asus one on offer) - 195
This should come in around 440 and will last for quite a while

edit- i take it you have an odd?

Yeah I'm just on phone at work ATM so can't copy n paste really, the 480 is a great deal, although I have just ordered a 560 personally, but I value quietness over raw performance, think I'm in minority though

Definitley not. I RMA'd a 470 and replaced it with a 5850 twin frozr because it's much quieter and cooler. The 5850 doesn't have the power of the 470, but i'm much happier with temps/noise when idle and load.
I think that that has made me prefer ATI cards in general tbh, i admit the performance might not be quite as good, but there are the temp/noise factors to consider, and in those respects, i prefer them.

But most people seem to prefer Nvidia's cards for their power.

I've had ATi cards for at least past 4 years/4 cards and just fancied trying NV again, I have no loyalty to either and don't understand anyone who does tbh, NV cocked up their GF100 architecture a bit, hence why the 470/480s were so hot n noisy, they were still great cards though, but they managed to sort problems in time for 460 n new 500 series so I'm giving em a whirl, just wish I could afford a 580 lol

I was about to buy this setup, but i think i may run into a problem with the PSU I have. The PSU in question corsair hx520w I'm not sure it will have enough power. if it isn't could you recommend a new PSU
