Hello everyone,

I am looking to upgrade somebody from a 1080TI to something better that can handle modern games, probably looking at £300 to £500 the less the better, would a 3060 be realistic or should I look 40 series? Also is 8GB enough or should I go for a 16gb card?

I would appreciate any responses :)

3060 isn't really an upgrade on a 1080 Ti, it is a monster card that one.

I'd go for a 9070 for that budget, unless nvidia is required.

Avoid 8GB cards, not worth it anymore.

so AMD is equal to Nvidia now in most peoples eyes?
No, but those two cards perform the same (or close enough) that they're considered equivalent.

Nvidia still has the edge with their upscaling tech and ray tracing performance, but the latest AMD cards are much better at both than the previous cards. FSR4 is a huge improvement.

The 4GB less VRAM on the 5070 is the main disadvantage, but we're being upsold to the 5070 Ti there.

In some areas their better others their worse. In pure FPS to the £ And all the way, better raster performance weaker Ray Tracing performance. FSR 4 is very good it sits somewhere between DLSS 3 and 4 in terms of upscaling quality with DLSS offering a slightly better performance bump over FSR. AMD drivers have been more robust and stable then the drivers Nvidia have been putting out over the last 18 months. In non gaming tasks Nvidia is very dominant.

I've got a 1080ti as well and eventually will pull the trigger on an upgrade although I'm struggling to justify it as I simply don't game anywhere near as much as I used to...

That said, as and when I do upgrade, it's going to be the used route as I don't see value in new pricing whatsoever.

Something like a 3080 / 3090 is one hell of an upgrade over a 1080ti and to me represents far better value for money.

Nowadays I would probably avoid the 3080 purely because it has only 10gb vram. The 12gb variant could be considered though, but this carries a price premium that I do not find worth the extra in comparison to the 4070.
The power draw is also atrocious (300w).

In all honesty the 4070 is probably the better choice with 12gb vram and only a 200w tdp that is less spiky and kinder to power supplies.
The performance between a 3080 and 4070 is equivalent.

I would go for a second hand 4070/4070 Super too if you can find one for a decent price (£300ish), maybe check the MM regularly. They are almost the same performance as the 5070 with the same vram amount and run cool and quiet, 3080 is quite a hot/power hungry card.

Used 3080 would be a decent upgrade on a 1080ti and can be had for less than £300. Higher VRAM requirements would depend on monitor resolution etc.

4070 is not a bad choice either.
