Never really thought about this. Great Britain uses GMT and everyone else is GMT + or -

If you go to another part of the world, say central America which is - 6 GMT, do they have their own time zone? (something like Central America Time, CAT) then set everyone else in the world as CAT + 6 say for UK?

Just been talking to people at work about this and I always thought everyone works off GMT. I remember when I was in Oz laughing at a map of the world that showed Australia in the middle, with a mass of water on either side and some little bits on the edges for everyone else.

Well they have PST.

So 08:00PST, they'd say here in the UK it's +6PST I imagine.

yes they do, well america does, especially as they have variation within the country

In the States they refer to it as Pacific Time, Central or Eastern Time, I guess because the country has several time zones. They don't refer to it as +8 or -8 etc though, it's just called Pacific/Central/Eastern

No. Everone uses GMT + or - but they have a name for that specific zone.

This.

That's the whole point of having a GMT, everything else is measured off the clock at Grenwich Observatory (well used to be). For example Arabic TV stations always do their times in GMT because they stretch over about a dozen time zones..
