Hi I'm currently doing a timing belt fitting but finding it impossible to get the new cable over all the pulleys/sprockets. Its as if the belt is too short.

I have double/triple checked the belt numbers and that it is the correct one they only do one for my car.

How tight does the belt need to be? , the only way I will get the belt on is with a screw driver and allot of force, but i don't want to damge the belt.

Car is a peugeot 406 2.1td 1998

Do NOT use a screwdriver, you WILL damage the belt even if you can't see it.

Timing belts are always quite a tight fit, you just have to ensure the tensioner is backed off as far as it can go and then slide the belt evenly over the pulleys. If you have the belt completely seated on all the pulleys but one, then it will often be too tight to slide onto the last pulley. It may even be possible to undo the tensioner, fit the belt and then bolt the tensioner back but no guarantees.

Sometimes it can be very tight....

I helped my friend do a Passat TDi timing belt last weekend and that was super tight.

In the end we actually pulled off the tensioner...

Screwdriver method also does work - But you have to very careful that you don't damage the belt...

As others have said, belts can be a really tight fit. When I did my volvo one I used one of those pump clamps to hold the belt tight on the crank pulley, which helped a lot. As you do one section another always seems to come loose.
