Scored a genuine new ford timing belt kit off amazon for a fraction of the RRP. The belt was manufactured in 2013 however.

Are they liable to aging like tyres? Both being constructed from rubber.

To some degree I would imagine - however, you have no way of knowing how long items have been on the shelf e.g. in a smaller motor factors, and timing belts are subjected to far worse conditions once actually fitted.

Rubber tends to degrade primarily from exposure to light, so if it's been boxed up it should be fine.

Ford give a 10 year service interval for a lot of timing belts, so a few years on the shelf shouldn't be a problem. The belts themselves very rarely fail anyway, it's usually a tensioner or something external getting caught in the belt that causes problems.
