I was just thinking about the timing of Halo3. End of September. I was wondering why they placed it then, obviously at the time R* were saying October for GTA4 so H3 needed to fit around that. However I think its a bit more than that.
MS see this game as a major console shifter, they are just about to release the 65nm processor and the Elite in the EU. So this game will help them shift the old stock.
If you look at the time of the month they are releasing the game, its after the 20th. Most companies pay their employees between the 18th and the 31st. So we can see MS expect / want consoles to be shifted with this game. As they are releasing is smack bang in the middle of pay week.
Ok so that bit is really no surprise to anyone MS want to sell consoles... Blah Blah... However here is where I think it gets clever. They have now got October, November and December of Timmy whining about wanting to play Halo3 and needing a 360 more than anything else in the world. Anyone with a 360 that wants Halo will no doubt have bought the game before Xmas. Anyone child (all gamers are children )that wants the game but does not have the console has 3 solid months to cascade this info to their technically inept parents/Better halfs.
So Xmas may see record 360 sales.
So when it comes to Xmas there are going to be a lot of gamers out there wanting games for presents Lets assume each console sold gets one game for Xmas. - Where are we now 11.6 Million 360s sold?- Lets say in the H3 frenzy it gets to 12.6 million by End of October, and By Xmas Day 15 Million*, - I don't know is that a generous or conservative estimate? - Either way 15 Million 360 Consoles all getting at least 1 game at Xmas. Not bad eh?
