Are these even legal? Lately noticed them more and more. From a distance you can barely make them out. One particular car has them fitted, been on there for month's and parks on a busy main road without problems.

Seeing these a lot around here. too. I'm really not sure what it's achieving. It's clearly deliberate deception vs the "it fell off" argument.

Just goes to show how little roads are policed or at least these minor things are overlooked these days. Although if I decided I wanted to fit in with the illegal plate crew, I'd get spanked for it within 10 mins :D

Yeah I'll. What a number plate has to look like is quite strict. It's just indicative of the lack if police on the roads.

I'll echo the "shows how little the roads are policed" sentiment.

Not tinted plates, but saw what must have been a 2014 onwards A6 saloon sporting black/silver plates the other day, both front and rear. How these people don't get pulled over (and why they'd want to attract police attention in the first place) is beyond me.

either most police don't know what an illegal plate is or they can't be bothered. i see illegal plates everyday. usually it's joining up of spaces or moving spaces around or crating additional spaces that should never be there though rather than the type of plate.

even had the wife of a police officer try and tell the mrs she should illegally space her plate to make it look better.

Not legal but it's like most 'small' offences, not enough police to deal with them now unless they put on an operation on and pull people in etc. Way too many dodgy spaced plates driving around in my area atm, It amazes me why people space their plate incorrectly but will soon moan if it gets stolen and it can't flag ANPR cameras as they are unable to read it.

Noticed that too lately, black/silver plates. Last one I saw was on a new Range Rover.

So i'm I right in thinking these are illegal also lol :p

Well that depends on the plate. Guernsey plates for example are black and silver and I see a fair few driving around here. But they're also only made up of numbers so it's usually quite easy to tell Guernsey plates from normal UK plates.

Vehicles that can display black and silver plates:

Since April 2015 vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1975 can display the older style plates.

Isnt it the stuff which reflects the flash from speed cameras rendering the photo unusable?

they're not legal but to get pulled over you gotta find a very bored copper :) they usually have better things to do..

I think OP means this monstrosity:

I've seen one and thought something had happened to it, didn't imagine it would've been something he'd tried to achieve!

I've seen dirty diesel backsides that have made number plates completely unreadable. I can't find any specific law around number plates having to be clean, except for an MOT.
