A late entry came up in Weston super mare, so going to give it a stab on monday.

The driving instructor in the area has let me use her car (a 180,000 mile, old clio!), and whilst I don't like the car it'll do.

So, what tips and tricks would you give to remember on the day? Thanks!

wait you're not using a car you are used to driving?

that's not a good start, best bet is to be as relaxed and comfortable as you can the rest just comes naturally from what you have picked up.

be confident, did mine on only a few hours sleep but i knew i was awesome. 2 minors (right at the last minute, was almost a perfect test)

Move your head to check mirrors. Do lots of safety checks around you when doing manoeuvres. Don't be too much of a pussy.

Don't treat it as a special test, just any normal lesson. Don't let nerves get the best of you, remember, you don't have to drive like a god, you can make mistakes, just show the instructor you can drive.

Don't crash.

chatting to the examiner isn't a bad idea. obviously you need to concentrate on the road, but if you can chat a bit about your job/ something topical, or comment about the roads/the traffic or something, it helps give the impression you are a relaxed driver. Even if that's a lie ;)

my the examiner fully reclined his chair so he was almost lying down, and his attention was almost exclusively focused on me and my behaviour while driving. I got 7 minors btw, which is close to a fail :p a couple of them were for ****e parking, tho :p

absolutely avoid the cheap instant fails. you should know what they are. (like not checking driver's mirror before pulling away from stationary).

Take a bottle of Coke or something like that with you, If you feel your concentration levels dropping then next time it is safe drink some. The sugars / caffeine should perk you up again. A small bag of sweets work just as well. I would avoid energy drinks though it will most likely look bad to the examiner.
