just looking for some tips on the very first website im going to be building very soon :)

its going to be for my girlfriend and will be basically on her and be a place for people to check out her skills, as she is a becoming actress.

Bascially the site will have homepage, photos page, expeirence page, contact page and thats about it.

the pages im wanting:

homepage - links to all the other pages, randomised photo in a box that changes every time you go on the sites homepage, simple design, looking at like a dark grey and slightly lighter grey colour scheme

photospage - will have all her photos her in a thumbnail and when youy click on them they enlarge in the centre, don't want them to load on a new page or load a new page. Dont know how this is done

expeirnce - will have c.v. info etc

contact - obvious

now im have basic knowledge from online tutorials on HTML/XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, and just finished learning Flash.

now i know most will reccomend doing this in html rather then flash but what i want to know if how easy is it to make the html look as good as flash, doesn't need to be as good sounding or have as many flashing things, but the layout i have no clue how to in html like uyou can in flash

the idea of the design is from here http://www.templatemonster.com/flash-templates/11851.html, its sleek and simple, but is obviously flash.

Wanting to get some advice on how i'd remake a site like that in html/javascript/css etc? would be nice to have the nice transistion affects that flash has, is this doable? rouglhy how?

Also smiple informatin i need and tips.

1. What size should i be doing it in? most places say 782 x 398 or something like that which fits 800x600. Is this best still or is that reccomendation old?

2. What size font is best? designing the layout in photoshop but don't know how big things should be, hard as my monitor is 1650x1050 and its for 800x600

3. Any other tips on how to create a website, i have no clue on what i start with, can peope post how they start a new site. e.g. design in photoshop, then right the css, then html, then javascript etc.

thanks all

Arh apologies, I should read threads fully. :p

I have done a portfolio website for my girlfriends art. www.bloomer.ca.

I would recommend not using flash, mainly due to accessiblity reasons. Yes, imo html websites can and do look a lot better than flash websites.

I whole heartedly agree, flash websites may look like they're appealing but they're not particularly, if you want a website that looks like flash but isn't you might want to think about using subtle javascript for fades and things.

Check out www.gucci.com for a prime example of javascript. :)

If you disabled JavaScript they have no website, though. Don't get me wrong, JavaScript is very useful, but something like that is a bit of a flaw.

I'd stay away from using any Flash in your website. But if you do want to use it make sure it's not for navigation, or if it is provide a text based version of the navigation as well. If you put the effort in you can make something just as impressive using X/HTML, CSS and some nice graphics.
