Just get a single GTX 970. I agree, the premium is not worth the extra for the 980, go for the 970 and you will max out all games at 1080p. You could even spend the rest + a little extra on a 1440p monitor which the 970 will also eat up. However, try and RMA or similar your graphics card if it's faulty, what exact problems are you having? The 290 is very nearly as fast as a 970.

If you have a 290 and playing at 1080p I dont understand why you need to spend the money, although the 970 is better and if you want a bit more power then fine but there must be a reason the 290 is playing up

What do you mean giving out support?

On WoW a big majority on both EU/US playing with AMD are experiencing problems and no sort of post has been made yet. (experiencing problems for a bout a month +) So bout time I take my custom else where :(

Edit: I know it's a quick fix, but I may just build a PC which spares I have. My R9 was working fine all night.. I go to sleep, wake up and log on to WoW and bam lost 80 fps or so in the space of 6 hours

I am in the saving up process for 1 maybe 2 970's so have been looking into this a lot lately and I have the same case as you.

Be careful which card you go for as the Antec300 only has room for a max GPU length of 27cm and that's only if you don't have any hard drives in the cage where it will line up with.

I found that the Reference 970/980 will fit with about 1/2cm clearance.

Unless you want to get busy with the Dremel that is :)

Thanks for the heads up man :)

Thanks for the help guys..

One last question if I were to buy the 970 what would I need if I wanted to dual? Ive wanted to do this for awhile

I would crossfire the 290. Upgrading to a GTX 970 is just not worth it. I went from a Radeon 7950 to a 970 and the difference in the latest games is not amazing or double as some would have you believe. Older games are faster but new games struggle.

Farcry 4 barely runs between 50-60fps maxed out and even Dragon Age has to be run without AA to runs between 50-60 fps. A 7950 ran these at only about 10-15 fps less. This is on an i7 3770 running at 4.3GHz. The higher bandwidth of the Radeons definitely makes a difference when game details are maxed out. Adding another cheap 290 would be the best bang for the buck at 1080p.
