Mate of mine asked me to install and set up a router for him. He's on Tiscali broadband and we bought a Netgear DG834G to set it up on Friday there.

It ran through the setup fine, we have all 4 lights as normal on the DG834 lit, but when we try and get online via I.E. it just shows "The page cannot be displayed".

Ran through the router settings and they appear to all be correct. Called Tiscali tech help and they were pretty hopeless.

Anyway, in the Netgear router settings when we click on the "Connection Status" box in the Basic settings, it tells us that "CHAP Authentication failed" and shows no IP address.

His PC was a bit of a mess as far as network connections and other superfluous stuff went, so we backed up all his data to my external HD and I reformatted and did a fresh install of XP.

Still the same, no joy.

Any ideas, because this has got me going round in circles trying to work out whats wrong??!!!.

Cheers.

Cheers guys.

Will get my m8 to call Tiscali tomorrow and confirm his username and p/w.

I too thought that the CHAP authentication problem might be down to a problem with his username/pword.

Will post back with an update.

Just a quick update on this.

Went round this afternoon and got everything up and running for him.

First thing he did was call Tiscali Billing and Accounts and get them to confirm what his password was.

That was the problem, we were entering the wrong password in the basic router settings.

Apparently, Tiscali had "changed" his password for him without him knowing!!.

After doing a bit of research online, it appears they do that quite frequently to their members. Must be a security related reason for it, dont know?.

Anyway, the upshot is my mates back online and his missus is chuffed to bits their laptop can now be used to surf the net.

Result!!!. :D
