titan 8700i pulse thoughts and questions

so, i'm thinking of getting the titan 8770i, change the case to a corsair, get a 660 cpu, 1 gb hard drive, win7 pro, but i'm wondering about upgradability.

i'm not up on the new processors but i would like the motherboard to be as upgradable as possible for the future. I see mention of the new ivybrige-E. Will the Asus P8Z77-V LX2 Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard that comes with the above be ok with some future upgrades or do i really need a 2011 socket board.

and if i do need a socket 2011 board is this something ocuk will be prepared to change in the titan spec??

(i know people will say build my own but honestly i can't be arsed - i want it as hassle free as possible

The sockets pretty dead, there won't be any new CPU's for it.
You can't put an Ivy-E in it.

The titan spec would be rather different with a socket 2011 board, it'd need a 3820 CPU.
That would chuck the price up a fair chunk.

Alternatively, Haswell's due in a few weeks.

ahh, for some reason i thought the older processors also fitted the 2011 socket.
that does make things expensive.
i assume haswell will be socket 2011, and will there be cheaper options when its available?
or am i stuck with getting an expensive cpu if i want the newer socket?

Ivybridge: 1155 Socket
Haswell: 1150 Socket
Sandybridge-e & Ivybridge-e: 2011 Socket

Haswell will be released very soon (3 weeks) and won't be too much higher than current Ivybridge, so you may be better off waiting.

Haswell will be a brand new socket ; 1150.
Socket 1150 is mainstream (Upto 4 cores with HT) whereas the enthusiast socket 2011 starts at 4 cores with HT.

only need the base unit and want to keep it under a grand.
want an nvida card - the 660 card seems a nice compromise between price and performance.
not much else really, but as i said i would want ocuk to build/install it - its not that i couldn't do it myself, i just don't want the hassle.

i've been getting by with my 4800+ and a 460gtx on winxp, but its really starting to show its age! But i don't change my motherboards very often and always try to upgrade components as much as possible, so something with a bit of headroom would be nice.

Haswell will be a nice starter point for upgrading as it will be a new socket entirely. In terms of GPU, you'll be definitely better off with a 7950 compared to a 660, however Nvidia do have the 7xx series coming soon as well.

yeah the new socket sounds like a good idea.

i sort of have an aversion to amd graphics cards though - i've tried a couple over the years and never got one working properly. Biased on a small amount of data i know but nvidia cards have always worked perfectly for me and i know and trust them.
