Hi all,

After my valiant, old PC gave up the ghost and the newborn is settled into life I'm finally getting around to purchasing a new rig. I want to spend around the £600-650 mark with the hope that I can play some of the more recent games with the graphical settings turned up high.

I was looking at the Titan Thor (on offer this week):

Some questions:

1) After reading many of the threads on these boards for the last few weeks I was going to upgrade the GPU to an ATi HD 5770 1024mb. Is this a worthwhile idea?

2) Is the 4gb of RAM enough for gaming?

3) Should I get Windows 7 64bit?

4) Is the Thor a good package for my needs, generally?

Thanks for reading!

Matt.

Hi and welcome

1) Yes, very good choice of card

2) Yes, 4 gig is plenty for pretty much anything

3) Yes definitely

4) Its OK, though I'd personally try a self build, Intels socket 775 is End of Line, meaning you're very unlikely to be able to upgrade this system, so you can try and go Intel i5 which is just slightly outside your budget probably or you can get a very nice AMD AM3 system, for gaming a dual core chip is perfectly fine. If you're happy building yourself - and it is quite easy - this is best option, if you want a pre-built then look at something like the Titan Sabre, comes with a 4890 rather than a 5770 but you could try giving them a ring see if they'd swap it

Thank you very much 95th! I'm afraid that I have far too little spare time at the moment to attempt a self-build, although it is something I would try in future. I was looking at the Titan Sabre, too. Following your advice I will probably go for that one and try to wrangle a 5770 instead!

Thanks again for taking the time out to help!

no problem, but just so you know, the 4890 is actually a better performing card than the 5770, doesnt have DX11 or other gubbins like the 5770 but it actually performs better in all current games
