Managed to fit an after market cooler to my 8800GTX at the time and that lasted years. In fact I think its still in the shed(£450 of card). 
The EVGA SC version, is that just the same as all the rest but overclocked by EVGA? They are not "special" chips or anything?

Nothing special other than a custom bios. My Gigabyte has a stock boost of 1189Mhz (on package stated 1075Mhz guaranteed I OCed to 1453mhz on air and stock bios) the SC has a guaranteed 1215mhz.
Most of the cards can do 1300 easy.. I think the lowest I have seen someone OC to is ~1340
