Titanic sinking theory

Aye, my dad served his time on steam turbine cargo ships in the 60s. I'm not sure how it came up as it was years ago now, could have even been about the Titantic, but I remember him saying the norm was to just use the coal out of the bunker that was on fire for stoking the boilers until it was out.

Saw a documentary a while back where they showed that the shipbuilders had saved money and used lower grade rivets than were in the design spec, sadly we will never know the exact reason for the sinking due to the passage of time :(

The unsinkable claim supposedly only done the rounds after it sunk, probably some newspaper coined it just to sell more copies.

In fairness the design was pretty much unsinkable in theory, the multi-compartment design was revolutionary in it's day, it's just on the ill fated day something went wrong (apart from hitting an iceberg lol).

It's worth noting that one of the Titanic's sister ships the Olympic survived a major collision and damage after an American cruiser collided with it, and became the first civilian ship in history to sink an enemy military vessel in combat during WW1 when it intentionally rammed a German submarine that was lining up to torpedo it. The third ship in the class the Britannic sank during WW1 after hitting a mine (adding to the modern theories that the sub-spec construction materials used on the Titanic/Britannic may have played a role in Titanics sinking).

Actually it was a collision with an iceberg, so we do know.
Obviously I meant why it wasn't able to survive the collision

Clearly CT crap. The ship has been discovered and researched. It is the Titanic and not the Olympic.

ah ha but is it....

During the build Olympic's and Titanic's names were switched, so in actual fact you could argue that it IS Olympic that lies at the bottom of the Ocean carrying Titanic's name.

Nonsense. There is no evidence to support such a ridiculous claim. All of the evidence including video footage of the Titanic's nameplate is there for all to see.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

The Titanic cover-up
A NEW investigation into the Titanic tragedy has uncovered evidence suggesting its sister ship Olympic is the one that sank amid an insurance scam and Government-sanctioned cover-up.

Researchers claim the virtually identical liners were switched the weekend before the “Titanic’s” maiden voyage and Olympic was deliberately sunk to save the White Star Line from financial ruin.

Another ship, the Californian, was supposed to rendezvous with the “Titanic” and rescue all on board.

However, a navigating error saw the “Titanic” hit an iceberg 12 miles from their Atlantic meeting point and go down without the Californian being alerted, with the deaths of 1,517. A new documentary, Titanic – The Shocking Story, alleges the government helped cover up one of the greatest frauds in maritime history because it needed the company’s liners for troop transporters during the looming First World War.

Three months after Olympic’s maiden voyage in 1911 it had collided with HMS Hawke off Southampton. Olympic was holed on its starboard side exactly where “Titanic” hit an iceberg six months later.

Insurers refused to pay for Olympic’s £500,000 repair because an inquiry cleared the Navy vessel of wrongdoing.

The White Star Line could not afford the repairs so the liner was patched up but would not have passed its next safety inspection. The documentary claims that J Bruce Ismay, chairman of the White Star Line, and its owner JP Morgan, who faced ruin, decided to switch Olympic for the Titanic before its maiden voyage on April 10, 1912.

Shipyard workers were apparently paid to change the names on the two vessels and on life rafts and life jackets.

Images of the sunken ship, from 2006, showed two letters of the Titanic name plate had fallen off, revealing an M and P engraved beneath.

Evidence pointing to a conspiracy includes the fact that more than 50 Titanic passengers cancelled their bookings at the last minute. Among them were its owner and the chairman’s wife. Surviving crew had to sign the Official Secrets Act, and Harold Sanderson, from shipbuilder Harland and Wolff, repeatedly referred to Titanic as Olympic at the British inquiry.

The White Star Line usually insured its vessels for 75 per cent of value, $10million each, but increased it a week before the “Titanic” voyage. The company received $12.5million five days after the ship sank.

I think in that video its claimed that White Star said none survived the sinking, but a few did but none were called. Don't remember the exact wording but at least 1 of them was mentioned as having survived it.

yes they claimed all had died but ismay had ordered all of the firemen back to the UK asap via telegram (they showed the telegram on the docu).

Saw a documentary a while back where they showed that the shipbuilders had saved money and used lower grade rivets than were in the design spec, sadly we will never know the exact reason for the sinking due to the passage of time :(

they claimed on the docu that photos of the olympics crash with HMS Hawke showed they were using low grade steel to save money and apparently had paperwork to back that up. how true that is i am not sure.

Sliver absolutely cannot be reasoned with.

It is interesting to note that the launched vessel had 16 portholes down the front, whilst during building and fitting out it only had 14 they're. Something was definitely changed!

Edit: Oddly enough, the Olympic does indeed have 16 portholes in exactly the same configuration of the launched Titanic

I must admit that when I saw the adverts for this, I just discounted it as another Daily mail style palava about nothing. My immediate reaction was "If they'd really found something, it'd be all over the news". Though from some of the posts I must it's now gaining my interest :p
