Hey guys,

Recently moved and am currently without a proper BB connection.
Last December we moved and used our phones, G1's on Tmobile for the internet for a couple of weeks.

We were able to use steam, play games, messenger and other things and were getting pretty suprising speeds.

Currently trying to tether wirelessly on my Tmobile HTC Desire, very slow, won't even allow me to connect to msn, tried alternative messenger clients and same thing, connects then disconnects. Also have been unablt to log into games, WoW in particular.

Has the TMobile Data Useage been changed to block certain portat all?
Is there anything on the settings on my phone Im missin? The phone is not rooted and am using the standard 2g hotspot function, speeds hitting ~70k :(

Any help appreciated :)

anyone?

Im holding out on a rumoured new sky deal so dont wanna go signing upto a full BB package with someone else lol

To get full speeds over wifi tether do I need to root?

Is your Desire T-mobile-branded? I'm asking cause I know for a fact that in the States some carriers mess with or completely remove the tethering features from the phones they sell. I don't know if this is the case in this country as well, but it might be why your Desire isn't working as well as your G1 was.

The one way to test if it's the phone or the network would be to dig up your old G1 again and put your SIM back in there, see if you're getting higher speeds with it than with the Desire. If it's still slow then maybe T-Mobile are simply messing with tethering at their end, something which you could probably bypass with some kind of anonymiser so they couldn't tell if it was a desktop or mobile browser requesting the data. I wouldn't know how to do this unfortunately, I don't know much about the whole cypherpunk scene, I just know it's possible.

yeah its a branded TMob Desire, but the USBa dn wifi tethering were added in one of the recent updates.

I rand the (I know not so reliable) speetest app 0.32MB down 0.76MB up Even simple things such as browsing are vv slow.

Unfortunatley I no longer have the G1 :( Sold it to fund the Desire

Anyone else having issues with the tethered speeds?

Well, I seem to remember other people mentioning they used tethering and didn't have a problem... so if you're also slow when browsing through the phone I'm guessing it's the reception in your area? Is there anyone else in your household who's also on T-Mobile and can run speedtest to check?

0.32mbit isn't a lot. What's the signal level showing as? Also if you're getting up > down in hsdpa this is usually a sign the node is running too many connections - which town/city are you in?

Sounds similar to my Desire when I visit my mum in Luton. The handset displays H but the speed is beyond poor.
Back home in Stansted though its fast enough to stream iPlayer to my laptop.

Thres another Desire in the house also on TMob, never occuired to me to try that one too lol

Will give that a go in the morning.

After reading some other bits and pieces about TMob...
Just tested my phone whilst at work...

0.4m down 0.3m up

H showing as connection with full signal.

Have TMob started throttling?

I've heard of people being capped at around .38Mbps and having to call t-mobile to take the speed cap off. Give them a call and ask them to remove it.

Just off the phone to em...
Waste of time :(

Said they would "refresh" my account and to call back if it didnt work.
Also said I needed a Landline or another mobile line to go thru diagnostics with em...

Gonna have to wait til the missus gets home.

Been having a similar problem with T-Mobile.....

My contract phone seems to be capped at 350Kb/s but my PAYG phone lying next to it gets 2Mb/s. I've swapped the SIMs between the phones & it's the SIM thats giving the problem not the phone.

The latest suggestion is to get a new SIM

Get a steady 1.5mb download on my vodafone tether. Was thinking of moving to T-Mobile for a W&W max plan for tethering but may stay put now.

Technically if you have a uSIM (which you do as 350Kbit is > EDGE) then you don't need another to unlock HSDPA. Sounds like possibly some plans are capped while others are not.

The shop said that I had been put on the W&W standard package by mistake so they upgraded me to W&W max but it doesn't seem to have made any difference hence the "clutch at straws" SIM change

T-mobile like to forget to tick the H-speed option on your contract took me ages to confirm I was actually ment to have it with my contract. I had to compair it with my girlfriends phone contract who has the same deal and they adventually fixed it, I went from 0.4Mb/s to 1.9 which seems all I can get in my area.
