hi same dalema as lots of other folk, was gonna get a 3ghz dual with a decient mb that takes it, now i read and see its better to get a 2.66 quad, im gonna use it for quick rar ,par and coding avi to dvd some games, gonna keep rig for few years and maby oc it, any advice appreciated

My money (literally) will be on a Q9450. My current chip (E2180) is destined for a HTPC rig. If you want a chip right now, then a Q6600.
 
The Q9450 will be as bugger to overclock due to its low multi. Also a few shops have them on pre order for £210+, which is a good 50quid more than a Q6600 G0.

If you are going to overclock then a Q6600 will be a better deal.
