to disable powerplay or not..

Hi guys

a week or two ago I asked a question regarding odd downclocking of my 7950 whilst playing Planetside 2.

I have done many things to try and prevent this, and no with the most recent 13.2 beta 4 cata drivers the problem appears less prevalent.

I better point out that this does NOT happen when the card is at default clocks.

However, it still exists. I will be playing away quite happy and boom! 500/150 (gpu/mem) clocks appear and obviously the game runs terrible.

It doesn't appear to be a heat issue, as it still occurs when the gfx card fans are at 100% GPU temp is never above 60C and the VRAM doesn't get above 70C.

It is more than likely something that is happening because of planetside 2 (in that it doesn't happen on any other game) but I am yet to see more than 1 other person with a 7950 have this issue.

So I am wondering, how safe is it to use UnofficialOverclocking = 2 in AB to disable Powerplay altogether?

Is this safe? and does it sound like it would solve the issue?

Thanks for any advice in advance guys.

Ben

Strange i get this aswell using AB with my 7970 Vapour i just stopped using AB to OC?

Did disabling powerplay fix the issue?

Unfortunately not. I had it running at 1100/1500 solidly on the desktop so powerplay was disabled, got in game and within 5 mins or so stutter and 500/150 :/ devastated!

I am at a loss as to what is causing this, I disabled lucid MVP and thought that had worked as I got a solid 20mins with no issues. Relogged and nope it did it again.

Also tried lowering the clocks to 1000/1400 and that was running well for a while but nope, happened again.

The only way it looks to work is to use stock, and the bios I'm on is the non-boost at 850/1250. I haven't played it on stock long enough to confirm this yet tho.

Thanks for the responses guys.

I've always got power tune set to +20% matt, and I have already used your great guide many times! I have tried AB, trixx and use radeon pro to force constant highest clock on the planetside profile I created, but no dice.

Really confused :(

No probs :)

I believe I might, in the profile set on radeon pro. At work at the moment so can't check unfortunately. It's set off in CCC by default I believe??

It was doing this prior to installing radeon pro as well though :(

Its funny you say that as I do exactly that when it happens, alt + tab out then change res and back again, alt + tab back in, and carry on. Sometimes I get 5 mins before I need to do it again and others longer.

I have already tried using option 2 on whichever setting it is under the unofficial clocking method (cant remember what its called :/) I know powerplay was disabled as my OC was held at 1100/1500 on the desktop. Unfortunately it happened again whilst I was doing that :(

I am indeed using windows 8 pro 64-bit, wondering if that is the culprit?

Will link this thread to Thracks and see what he makes of it. Thanks a lot by the way for your help Matt, I appreciate it.

No problem. :)

It might well be a specific windows 8 issue. I'm almost positive that it only happened to me with battlefield 3 as well. I've not played that game since 12.11 beta 8 though and no longer have the spare ssd space to reinstall it currently so cannot confirm that its still an issue.

I really don't know if I can be bothered to dual boot to Windows 7 to check if it is :( may yet have to!

I have asked Thracks about it, so will wait to hear what he has to say. Will post any updates as and when I have them!!

Interesting indeed. I had the problem with beta 2 as well. I might try an older driver out of curiosity. Like the features and improvements of the latest ones tho :(

Have you changed anything else shankly?

Installed Beta 13.2 beta 3 then 4 after a clean uninstall of 13.1.

Thats the only change I have done. This has only happened once tho on Fifa 13 not had it happen since.

I always do a full uninstall + driver fusion. I've noticed that when I installed both beta versions it failed to successfully install the HDMI audio drivers, so I don't know if there's any problem with these.

Might try the proper 13.1 tonight and see what it does!

Well Thracks thinks its simply down to a not stable overclock. I'm not sure what to make of that as it does it from 950 all the way up to 1100. Find it hard to believe that running on everything else fine it isn't a clocking card at all. Would those of you who have also had this issue believe that? No disrespect or anything, he will clearly know a lot more than me!

Well it hasn't done it at stock, but I haven't played it for long at all on stock to know for sure. I must concede that if it doesn't then the problem could well be an unstable clock as thracks says.

If this is the case should I up the voltage and see if that helps?

well, not that I want to jinx it, but a slight voltage increase appears to have solved it.

I was watching the voltage on gpu-z and when the game stuttered I saw that the voltage took a temp dive and the clocks were changing then.

Originally I had upped the voltage way too high and the VRAM overheated.. oops :( my bad.

Now it seems more stable and was running well for about 30mins. As soon as the planetside servers are up again I'll do some more testing.

Thanks to everyone who has helped, really appreciated! (I'll check back in once more tests done to confirm :)

Just reinstalled battlefield 3 and can confirm this issue did not happen at all unlike last time. Only difference was this time im not using RadeonPro and im not trying to force triple buffering.

That's interesting indeed, do you think radeon pro's force triple buffering was doing it? Or coincidence?. I put it down to voltage dips, I thought having the 'force constant voltage' on in afterburner would hold it steady, but its all over the place on some games.. unless user error again???
