Hi,

The missus seems to have a natural eye for composition of images and has come up with some crackers even on our old Sony P71 (which is crap btw!)

I want to get her a better camera, but wondered whether going for a full blown Canon 400D would be a step too far (it's certainly a stretch budget wise at the moment).

What would you good folks recommend for someone that's a natural that wants to move up a step? Is there a good intermediate level camera that isn't a DSLR that gives decent point and click, and yet gives manual control too? Sorry to ask like a noob....!

Cheers

CK

Well, given the price of entry level DSLRs these days I'd recommend going down that route, particularly if your mrs has a natural creative talent - give her the best start possible.

What I found when I was starting off with a bridge camera, after 2 months I was wanting a SLR mainly due to being unable to execute long exposures at narrow apertures using the bridge.

400d or D40x I think are both great.. It all depends whether you want to spend the cash or not I guess, buying expensive glass can get addictive :)

Personally I would go for a Canon 400D body 18-55mm IS kit lens to get you up and running, this should give you better shots than any P&S camera and once you get use to it start added more lenses like a Canon EF 50mm F1.8 MkII cracking little prime for not much money & a decent telephoto lens should you want to take pics of sports/nature ect & a half decent tripod & bag to carry your stuff in.

But beware once ya get the bug you find you start emptying your bank balance on better lenses I've just invested in my first bit of L glass and i doubt it stop there lol.

Moving to DSLR will definately allow for greater control over what you are photographing. Canon and Nikon I reckon are top and you can't really go wrong with either. I had an old Canon EOS 5 SLR which I was really happy with and have recently switched to DSLR but opted to go down the Nikon route with the D80. No real reason really but have always wanted to have a Nikon SLR and for what I was happy to spend at the time I reckon the D80 came out tops. As already stated you won't go far wrong with either the Canon 400D or the Nikon D40x. Top tip though, use the Net as the high street rip you off no matter which camera you end up buying.

Also consider buying 2nd hand aswell you can get some great bargains if you look at various photo sites.
