As of recently I've been looking at both the GTX 295 and the GTX 285; and if it wasn't for FS2004/FSX (probably two of my most played games) I would simply opt for the 295; but there's my dilemma.

Both FS2004/FSX doesn't take advantage of more than one GPU, so the 295 should be running at 280 speeds in FS2004/FSX (which should be fine since they're both much more CPU dependant), but I think there have been reports than the FPS in FSX especially, have been awful ~15 FPS.

Could anyone confirm this?

You could always set in the nvidia profile for SLI to be disabled upon launching FSX. I had to do this with Lineage 2 on my old M1730 because SLI enabled gave the most orrid frame rates.

I'm not 100% clear, but I'm quite sure the difference on a single card in the 295 will be quite small compared to a 285. You'll experience the biggest hit with AA applied due to the lower volume of RAM. Nothing too bad though.
