To flush or not to flush

I use redex on my bike which helped quite nicely actually. Won't do any harm and it's not really expensive.

Your link is broken but I'm guessing it's that stuff you put into a full tank? Same as redex

unless youve had the engine open and noticed loads of varnishing etc i personally wouldnt bother

it shouldnt do any harm but it might not do any good either.

from what iv read when i was considering doing this, engine flush stuff is for keeping clean engines clean and not to be used as a 1 off years / thousands of miles later.

i use engine flush in all cars with varied millages and never had an issue. We use Forte at work and it is good stuff. It shouldn't cause any harm at all.

Some people will recommend it and others wont, always an arguement point.

If you did flush it and it started using oil etc then you would know that you engine is bad anyhow lol

Flushing was an issue back in the 80's/90's particularly with old push rod Fiestas/ CVH Escorts.

The engines would sludge up so badly, even without any particular neglect being involved! (I am talking inch thick deposits inside the rocker cover etc  ) that if you did do a flush with any product that actually worked a blocked oil strainer/filter was an almost inevitable consequence!

This is much less of an issue these days but it is not unheard of!

I have seen some truly dreadful cases of the consequences of "Extended servicing" But use a good quality oil changed at sensible intervals and "sludge" really isn't an issue any more!

As such, a flush agent shouldn't cause any problems and may well have some benefits removing varnish build up on close tolerance components (Particularly if you have noisy tappets) but, as always use discretion! If you can see a lot of "sludge" through the oil filler then it might not be a good idea!

I was going to do this on my Saab, but the concensus is that if there is crud in there somewhere and flushing dislodges it, you could end up with blocked oilways/pickups etc, which would be far more harmful than a piece of dormant sludge/crud which may never move.

The garage I used for my old e46 318i insisted on putting forte in the engine, tbh, it must have done some good, when I bought the car on cold startup it would noticeably tick, two oil changes (with flush) later and the start up tick had gone completely!

As per the link in the OP, it's been known at work for supposedly professional drivers to top up the coolant via the oil filler cap on our Scania trucks, scary people can be this dumb!!
