To HD Or Not HD

I have SKY+ HD and the football looks amazing. Also some of the documentries, the clarity is just so so much better than SD.

Ok so its expensive but if you spend a lot of time in front of the tube, then take the plunge you wont regret it.

Well worth it.

I've recently cancelled the HD sub on Sky+HD as I just didn't see the point in the end.

HD is definitely better, no doubt about that. But £10.25 a month better? No chance, unless you have Sky Movies and watch quite a few of them.

Got SkyHD a few weeks back, manged to gey 6 months half price on my original Sky sub so though I go for it, fairly pleased with it so far :)

I've never seen them marketed as 'LCD televisions with LED backlights'. Indeed if we look at your link from earlier:

Nowhere in the title or description does it say "LCD television with LED backlights", you have to actually go into the technical spec to see LCD mentioned. They don't show that level of technical spec in most high street stores, at least not when I was buying a TV 3 weeks ago.

Even online you can find 'LED' TVs being sold without even mentioning LCD at all, even in the tech spec:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/LG-42LE4500...reeview/dp/tech-data/B0043M66AO/ref=de_a_smtd

That was the first TV I found with a search for 'LED tv' too.

The difference between the lot is huge. I only noticed this when at the Gadget Show in the NEC last year. You can clearly see the difference in quality when you have all them in the same environment next to each other. :)

LCD - everyone knows this so I'm not going to bother

Plasma - deeper blacks with a potentially better quality picture especially for movies in terms of flow (if that makes sense) but both plasma and LCD use a lot of fancy technologies.

LED - this is a bit more tricky. It's not full LED backlight but its not lcd/plasma exactly, kind of combines both making for a good compromise especially if you get a good offer on one.

AMOLED and OLED - so amazingly crisp its unbelievable. High prices (imo at least) at the moment but it is still early days so who knows how its going to progress. The detail on each and every part of the display is out of this world and very natural to look at.

It's hard to make a case for any them on the internets so get yourself into some shops! :D

I find the sound to be quieter on HD programs. Anyone else?

This is on Virgin though.

My parents have Sky HD and the difference is noticeable on there 37PX70 Panasonic.

Am I the only one who finds rooms (especially smaller ones) filled with an overly massive TV a little crass?

No you're not, it seems to be quite a common opinion - similar to those people who used to think satellite dishes meant ***** area. My mum is a bit like that.

You can go too big in my eyes but that opinion is more to do with practically reasons rather than snobbery.

Does anyone think they will be obsolete with the new 3D Tv's? I think of it like when Ni-cam digital sound came out, everyone was saying you must have it.

Then widescreen came out and it was no longer a selling point as they all had their own sound systems.

Not sure I would pay more to watch stuff in HD. I might do in 3D, but I guess it is someway off.

What percentage of content is filmed in HD compared to upscaled, cant be that high.

Depends if you narrow it down at all, obviously there's a lot of channels on Sky/Virgin and only about 50 odd HD channels, but the HD channels cover pretty much everything now.

The vast majority of sports are native HD, F1 is going HD this coming season, as is BTCC. Movies are obviously HD and in the evenings most of the HD channels are carrying native HD content (daytime TV is obviously mostly upscaled).

Sitting about 9' from a 32" TV I could see a massive difference between SD and Sky 720p HD on my old telly, anyone who can't i would suggest their eyesight is a fair bit away from perfect as I could barely tell the difference before I started wearing contacts.

Is Sky HD worth it for a tenner? Only just, but only if you watch decent amount of sport and have a Sky Sports sub.

We only have the free Sky HD channels and I can tell the difference on our little 32" 720p screen.

Only problem is we keep running out of planner space on the sky box so I'm going to put a bigger HDD in soon.
We have the newer Amstrad 250GB box so god knows how people on the original 160GB drives cope.
Would get the new 1TB box from sky but I'm not paying the silly prices they are asking for it.
