I have about a ton of rubble to get rid of. Would i need to hire a skip or can you take that amount to the local dump? (in a hire truck)

If i hire a skip im guessing they just deliver it, you fill it then they take it away and thats the last you hear of it.

Never had to hire one so i have no knowlege on this.
Ive also heard of 'hippo bags' anyone ever used them?

Dont know about local dumping in your area as most old 'tips' are being turned into recycle centres so everything needs to be sorted beforehand, also, they do not allow trade or any large vehicles (ones round here, but guess it would apply to most places)

Best bet would be to hire a skip, an average price for an 8 yard would be 190ish. But make sure you can put it on your drive and not on road (otherwise you need to get permission from local council)

Just hire the skip mate much easier :)

Tell them what u got to get rid of and they will give u the right size skip (ring a few companies for best price)

If you have the skip on your garden (off road) it will be cheaper. Having it on the road means you have to pay for a permit on top of the price of the skip.

Dont bother with hippo bags and to much trouble/time with hireing a truck and getting rid of it to the tip.

Hope that helps :)

Wouldn't an 8 yard skip bit a bit overkill for a tonne of rubble? a 2 or 4 yard would probably be big enough.

wheely bin over a number of weeks tbh

Richie.

Reminds me of years ago when my mum put a back of soil out every week. Sometimes the bin men wouldn't take it as it was too heavy :o

Get a skip though, make sure randoms dont put random stuff in. My dad got a skip OTS from the guy that delivered the skip to his work and it could only be certain things in it. So when some numpty fired a carpet in.....not good.

if you get a skip make sure you fill it on that day. Heard stories of people getting skips to find them full the next day with other peoles rubbish

It would be tricky to get rid of that much rubble at a council tip. Last year I got a telling off from a site supervisor for taking too much rubble.

Councils are under considerable pressure to reduce the amount of rubbish handled due to the EU directives they are failing to meet.

The upshot was that rubble and building waste was being limited to 8 (I think) sacks per person per year. They class it as non-household waste even if diy produced.

He also mentioned plans by Barnet council to introduce ANPR cameras. Cars that used Barnet tips too often would be flagged and could be banned if the site supervisor found non-household waste.

Your ton of rubble is going to be 30-40 bags depending how heavy you make them.

I enquired about a 4 yard skip. Its going to be about £130, im fairly sure i dont need a licence to put it where im going to put it. Its only going to be there a couple of days anyway - Its will be put behind my house, down a dead end where there are some mostly unused (as far as i can tell) garages.
Hippo bags get collected for about £60 and about £12 to buy. I can have the hippo bag in my garden so wont have to worry on how long it will be there for.

I did see something called a Rhino bag and you get two for a lot cheaper, but sadly they dont do Southampton.
