To ips or not?

Glad to see my monitor getting such a vote of confidence!

I moved to it from a Dell 22" TN. The IPS is such a step forward! Absolutely recommended here for all uses.

For 120Hz computer monitors, there's also the Eizo FG2421, which uses a 120Hz VA panel. But at £450, it's a bit pricy for a 24". But atm it's apparently the only consumer-grade monitor with a 120Hz VA panel. But if you're patient, I'd wager other manufacturers would be eager to jump along and bring their own offerings in the near future, so here's to hoping for lower prices.

== The rest of the post is focused on HDTV talk, so anyone not interested in that can skip to the end ==

Pretty much a rule of thumb for LCD HDTVs:

Samsung uses VA.
LG uses IPS.

The rest have a more mixed selection, so no clear rule for them. Furthermore, most of the bigger names also have plasma and OLED offerings, in addition to their LCDs.

And not so long ago, there used to be TVs with TN panels, too (especially smaller ones), but nowadays TN is relatively rare in TVs. Might find some from the no-name-brands. (I think I read somewhere that some cheaper 4k TVs might opt to use TN to reduce costs...?)

With regards to 120Hz:
There are plenty of 100/120Hz TVs available (VA/IPS). Unfortunately, it's usually limited to only a 60Hz input via the inner electronics, as the source material is pretty much always 60Hz, so no need to enable higher. Computers are the main source for higher Hz material. Although, there are unofficial work-arounds to unlock the higher framerates, but it's not guaranteed to work.

But even more unfortunately, none of the manufacturers state which monitor uses which panel. Even it they advertise "100Hz", it's most probably just a motion interpolation feature, using a regular 60Hz panel. Some of the "motion" features might not even interpolate anything, they're just inserting black frames or strobing the backlight (which might be good for reducing motion blur, though). I think one old Philips HDTV advertised "400Hz PMR" (PMR = Perfect Motion Rate"), which in the end used a regular 60Hz panel, the rest was just "enhancements". And it's not just a single manufacturer, the whole TV market is full of shady advertising, you really have to dig up if you want to know something specific.

The difference in screen surface alone has a significant impact on the image quality. He actually wrote one of the reviews you have probably read on the monitor and I have written another. When I wrote my review of the P2414H for pcmonitors.info I actually had a U2412M side by side with the monitor for a lot of the testing. The default colour setup, overall richness of colours and image quality is simply superior on the P2414H. The responsiveness is also much better balanced - and I've had a user who likes to game upgrade from a U2412M to P2414H and completely agree with that assessment. I am glad you're happy with the U2412M, but for the OP who starts by saying 'basically I'm a gamer' it isn't really the best choice.

Fair points! I'm at the other end. More of a desktop/cad user with the odd bit of gaming thrown in, so I really like to have the extra screen space. Would have loved a 1440p screen, but couldn't stomach the cost of a decent one!

Either way, monitor is set up and running, nabbed the icc profile off of tftcentral, and I'm well chuffed. It looks sharp and colours are great, the AG coating doesn't bother me, and it seems blur-free enough (for me, not going to pretend to be well vested enough to judge absolutely) for me to be able to game on it happily.

I've recently ordered a U2414H, was going to get a P2414H but I'm tight on space so the slimmer bezels sounded nice and it was the same price when I ordered. I've got my fingers crossed that it reviews as well as the P2414H which looks to be the bees knees for 24" IPS for gamers at the moment.

I asked OCUK to get the P2414H in but they decided not to :( apparently it doesn't sell well enough which is surprising given it's one of the most recommended monitors on here. Don't know if they'll get the U2414H in or not.

Edit: Actually, I've just cancelled that order, will wait for some reviews & pick.
