Hi Everyone,

Should i lap my 6600 conroe idle temps in tat are 48/50c and load temps are 60/62c this is with a tuniq tower and 1200rpm scythe fan on a ds3 with 1.350v @ 3.2ghz, I just know when the weather warms up those load temps might get a bit much thanks.

I lapped before bothering to check if my IHS was flat and I lost a wopping 1 degrees C. My 805D runs on stock volts at a mild overclock to 3.2GHz at 32 degrees C load.

Was so not worth my time. If temps are not capping your clock I wouldn't bother.

Yeah, depending on how concave it is. Some people have been getting 10C+ off their load temps, but obviously if yours is almost flat, it's not really worth it, due to the warrenty factor as well.

How do you know if your cpu is concave? Is it just a case of using a ruler or a straight edge to check that?

a spirit level or put a marble on it and see if it rolls
i shouldnt laugh as i havent built mine yet mins probably concave too
it looks ok though hard to tell i guess best way is put a straight edge and hold it up at a light seems a lot of the new stock is concave.Do you think intel are
doing it on purpose to stop people getting such good value from their chips?

A ruler or a credit card.

theres a lapping grid online somewhere, where u line it up with the screen and check how straight/bent the lines reflect on the heatspreader.
sounds to me that you dont have the cooler on correctly, or you might be using garbage paste. i'd try reseating and regloobing with decent paste first before trying to sand down the heatspreader. currently i've been leaving my machine on all day while remoting to it from work. on idle its sitting at about 22-24 degrees. i seriously doubt a 6600 would run at such high idle temps due to a concave spreader.

Mine idles at about 45c! (Measured with TaT)
I have a convex spreader thou!
I was suffering major heat problems when I first OC'd, it just would not run Orthos stable, and thats water cooling!
I have a DD CPU block as per sig and thats lapped really well as std, but when I removed it I found it was only contaxting the CPU on a 5mm dia area central to the die!
I did not think of lapping so stuffed a circular bead of AS5 in and reseated!
Bingo my OC works fine at 3.4GHz! When I change my gfx for an 8800 and change the loop I am going to lap the CPU as I am POSITIVE it will have good results.
My load temp is about 55c currently (using Orthos to load CPU not TaT)

Just lapped my cpu and the results, idle now 46c was 50/52c load 55c was 60/62c so not a bad decrease and when the as5 cures it should drop a little more :D

Good to hear Dan, your temps did seem far too high. For anyone else apparently a razor blade is one of the best items to use as you can also tell by the reflections in both the blade and the cpu just what the distance between the two is.

going to do mine tonite.

Are you guys using sand paper or wet and dry?

Seen both mentioned in diff palces, guide i have printed out says to use 300,600 and 1000 grit sandpaper on a nice bit of glass or a mirror.

When it says cleaning 99% Isopropyl can someone suggest some please lol.

A named brand.

I'm sorry, but when I read this I genuinely just laughed out loud and the other guys here came over to look and now we've got a fit of the giggles. :D
